1st Friday @ AV Framing - Home, Spot, Figures

AV Framing Gallery Turns 2-Years Old!

"Home, Spot, Figures"
new works by
Brian Duff

Where: AV Framing Gallery, 1139 Shelby St., Fountain Square
When: Showing February 6--March 27, 2009
Parking: Free Public Parking lot across Shelby Street
Special Events: Artist Reception on IDADA First Friday Gallery Tour,
open Friday, Feb. 6, 5:00-9:00pm.

Join us at AV Framing Gallery as we celebrate 2 years in Fountain Square! We welcome back the artist who started us off, Brian Duff.

“Home, Spot, Figures” is a selection of works aiming to express individuality and loneliness.

“Art, in general, is a conversation…
between artist and paint, artist and the finished work, the painting and the viewer,” Duff says. “I see art as a marriage of passion and mind.”

Duff’s paintings seem peeled from the many folds in his mind. His heavy brush-strokes and urgent use of color excite the imagination to see common views in a new way.
COME CELEBRATE WITH US!

Come and see for yourself at AV Framing Gallery in Historic Fountain Square

Rain Barrel Workshop

Save on a Rainy Day:
KIB Hosts First Rain Barrel Workshop

On February 21st from 9:00 am - 12:00 pm, KIB will host a workshop where participants will learn about the importance of rainwater conservation, learn to build a rain barrel from start to finish, and help manufacture rain barrels to be sold to the public. The proceeds from the rain barrels will go toward community tree plantings through NeighborWoods, KIB's program to plant 100,000 trees in 10 years.

In addition, each attendee will have the opportunity to take a rain barrel home! Registration for this workshop is limited and the fee is $45.00, which includes the rain barrel. To register, e-mail Sarah at sgrain@kibi.org.

Why rain barrels?

A rain barrel can save approximately 1,300 gallons of water during peak summer months.
Rain barrels reduce water pollution by reducing storm water runoff, which can contain pollutants like sediment, grease, oil and bacteria.
Rain barrels are inexpensive and easy to build and install.
Thanks to the Center for Watershed Protection for this information!

The other plays include Phyllis & Xenobia, The Book of Leviticus Show and Funeral Parlor (originally written for Carol Burnett and Robin Williams).

The cast that brings these fast-paced comedies alive includes Indianapolis favorites Bill Simmons (recently seen in Terrence McNally's Some Men at the Phoenix), Diane Kondrat (most recently seen in Indiana Repertory Theatre's Sherlock Holmes: The Final Adventure, Scot Greenwell (recently seen in Indianapolis Civic Theatre's The Little Shop of Horrors) and Jon Lindley (Some Men), with new-comers Matt Goodrich and Anna Ardizzone.

Indy Drinking Water Change

Indianapolis Water customers may notice slight change in drinking water

In the coming weeks, Indianapolis Water customers may notice a slight difference in the taste of their tap water as the result of annual maintenance work on the area’s water distribution system.

Veolia Water Indianapolis (VWI), the operator of Indianapolis Water, will temporarily change the type of chlorine used to disinfect the drinking water that is delivered to customers’ taps beginning Jan. 19 and lasting through the end of March or early April. This change is made on an annual basis to optimize water quality in the city’s drinking water distribution system throughout the year. The change will remain in effect until the completion of a capital project to improve the system’s infrastructure.

SUSTAININDY.ORG

CITY LAUNCHES SUSTAININDY.ORG WEBSITE

The Office of Sustainability announced today the launch of sustainindy.org - a website developed to connect citizens and businesses with sustainability efforts taking place in Indianapolis.

"We are committed to making Indianapolis one of the most sustainable cities in the Midwest," said Mayor Greg Ballard. "Developing a one-stop shop site for information about sustainability initiatives in our city is key to educating our residents and corporate citizens about how they can help make our city a better place to live."

Sustainindy.org contains information ranging from green infrastructure guidelines to tips for increasing energy efficiency and also information about the city's Green Commission. It will also serve as a place where the city will highlight different sustainability projects throughout the city and show how the private sector is doing its part to help improve the quality of life for residents. Sustainindy.org includes a mechanism for businesses and residents to tell the city what they are doing to help make Indianapolis one of the most sustainable cities in the Midwest.

"Since day one, the office of sustainability has fielded requests from businesses and individuals seeking ways to connect with sustainability projects, to volunteer, to donate resources, or to learn more about how to help green Indianapolis. Sustainindy.org provides an answer for anyone asking how to get more involved in making our city sustainable," said Kären Haley, Director of the Office of Sustainability.

Visit www.sustainindy.org to explore the new site and to learn more about the city's sustainability initiatives

Launched in October 2008, SustainIndy is Mayor Ballard's bold and innovative enterprise aimed at delivering long-term cost savings to the city, building the local economy, improving our quality of life and enhancing our environmental and public health. Its efforts are designed to aggressively move Indianapolis forward in making it one of the most sustainable cities in the Midwest.

MCKINNEY FAMILY FOUNDATION ESTABLISHES FUND TO SUPPORT SUSTAININDY INITIATIVE

The McKinney family, long-time leaders in the Indianapolis business and environmental communities, announced today the creation of the McKinney Family Green Initiatives Fund to support the city's SustainIndy initiative and to help drive local sustainability projects.

"We have been impressed by and appreciative of Mayor Ballard's leadership in creating the Office of Sustainability and making green initiatives a priority of his administration," said Kevin McKinney, spokesperson for the McKinney Family. "We are pleased to be able to support the city's efforts and look forward to working together to make Indianapolis a greener, more sustainable community."

"The McKinney Family Green Initiatives Fund will move Indianapolis a significant step forward toward our goal of becoming one of the Midwest's most sustainable cities," said Mayor Greg Ballard. "Partnerships are the key to achieving this goal, and I am truly grateful to the McKinney family for their commitment to our city."

The charitable fund, established through the Central Indiana Community Foundation (CICF), initially will be designated to support Office of Sustainability staff salaries, developing the first LEED-certified city owned building in Indianapolis, and creating bicycle lanes on city streets.

Launched in October 2008, SustainIndy is Mayor Ballard's bold and innovative enterprise aimed at delivering long-term cost savings to the city, building the local economy, improving our quality of life and enhancing our environmental and public health. Trash Pickup Issues

Cold Temps Create Trash Pickup Delays

Due to the extreme cold temperatures today, there will be NO residential trash, heavy trash, or curbside recycling service collection today, Friday, January 16. Weather permitting, all haulers will run Thursday routes tomorrow (Saturday), and will attempt to pick up some Friday trash as well if possible. While we will attempt to service as many residents as possible, we will most likely not be able to get to all Thursday and Friday routes on Saturday. All stops that are not picked up this week will receive a double pickup next week.

Moving forward, if you receive calls next week regarding missed Thursday or Friday routes from this week, please let the residents know that they will be eligible for double pickup next week on their collection day (remembering that we are running one day behind due to MLK Jr. Day). We will not send trucks back for missed Thursday/Friday routes before the actual collection day.

Please let me know if you have any questions or need additional information. Thanks for your cooperation. We really appreciate all your help in getting the word out to our residents.

Weather Related Trash Pickup Delay

Weather Related Trash Pickup Delay

Please note the weather related trash pick up information below. Due to the extreme cold, we are not going to have trash pick ups today. So for those of you that have pick ups today (Thursday), it may be tomorrow before the pick ups will occur. Consequently, everything will be pushed back a day or two, depending on the weather. DPW will evaluate the status of tomorrow’s (Friday) pick ups tomorrow morning.

Also, as an additional reminder, there will be no scheduled trash pick up this coming Monday, due to the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday, which may push things back another day.

I appreciate your patience, and am confident that you understand that it is in the best interest of the workers that we are not sending them out in weather like this.

As always, if you have any questions, please feel free to contact me either via e-mail or by phone. My office # is listed below. Thank you!

Extreme Cold Safety Precautions

Citizens urged to take safety precautions in extreme cold temperatures

As all Central Indiana braces for severe cold temperatures in the forecast, the City of Indianapolis would like to remind all citizens to take proper steps to ensure everyone remains safe and healthy in extreme conditions.

"In times like this, citizens need to take care of each other as best they can," said Mayor Greg Ballard. "Extreme cold, snow and ice can be very dangerous and often times fatal. I urge people to take steps to ensure they survive the extremities unharmed, but being educated on those measures is key to staying safe and healthy this winter."

The National Weather Service expects temperatures to begin falling today and be near or below zero by late Thursday evening or Friday morning. Actual air temperature is predicted to be in the single digits and wind chill could potentially be in the -10 to -15 degree range. Officials at the Indianapolis/Marion County Emergency Management Agency will be working with public and private agencies to monitor the situation throughout the week and to address any issues which may arise.

When temperatures drop significantly below normal, staying warm and safe can become a challenge. The greatest threat posed by extreme cold is to the health and welfare of humans and animals. A secondary hazard is to infrastructure, such as water pipes, demands for electricity and the use of unsafe emergency heating devices.

Preparedness is the key to your safety:

* Please use caution and be aware of hazardous driving conditions. Leave early and don't follow the car in front of you too closely, the roads may be slick and icy in spots and it may be difficult to stop quickly.

* Listen to the weather reports, plan accordingly

* Have an emergency supply kit in your vehicle and your home; Food and water (1 gallon/person), flashlights, mobile phone, charger, spare batteries, blanket/sleeping bags, first aid supplies and a battery operated radio are all important components of a disaster kit.

* Ensure that extra blankets and heavy clothes are available for everyone in the family.

* Beware of potential fire & carbon monoxide hazards; if you are planning to use an emergency heating source such as a fireplace, wood stove or space heater.

* Listen to an All Hazards NOAA Weather Radio, or local radio and television stations for the latest updates

* Keep a close eye on those who may need help; the elderly, the young and the disabled may need extra assistance during this time of extreme cold.

These tips and more are available online at www.indygov.org/ema or the National Weather Service website at www.nws.noaa.gov/om/winter.

IndyFringe Building, 719 E. St. Clair St.

There's nothing like a couple of hours with Sigourney Weaver's favorite playwright to lift you out of the gray of late January.

Through these events the Circle City Chamber Group works to help strengthen downtown-Indianapolis commerce as we spark interest in the various arts in the minds of guests who might not already have an on-going relationship with the arts. The concept for the CCCG’s events was developed while Lyon was completing his Masters degree (Orchestral Conducting) at Butler University and working security for nightclubs and taverns in Indianapolis. Lyon also works as the President of Lyon Distribution, Inc (a sheet music distribution company); as Director of Development and Public Affairs for the International Conductors Festival in Kiev, Ukraine (during which he also appears as one of four featured American conductors); and, a saxophonist of 20+ years, also works with area students teaching saxophone and music theory.

Pothole War

To all,

Here is some news from Channel 6 about the City’s efforts to improve the way we respond to chuckholes. I would encourage you all to help be our eyes out there and would reiterate what I sent out before about calling the Mayor’s Action Center anytime you see chuckholes in your neighborhood or on your commute. The MAC will need an address, if you can get one, but if you have an intersection, we can make due with that.

The number for the MAC is 327-4622.

Thanks for your assistance with this! Dennis Papenmeier, Mayor's Liaison

City Takes New Tack In Pothole War
Permanent Fixes, Pothole Districts Touted

January 7, 2009
WRTV – 6

INDIANAPOLIS -- Indianapolis is trying some new things to address the pothole problem, which seems to have come earlier and is more prevalent this year than last. The city has been divided into three pothole districts, and an emergency pothole response team will take on the big ones, 6News' Rick Hightower reported.

With drastic swings in temperatures in recent weeks, it's expected that the pothole problem will go from bad to worse. The pothole patrol will try to make repairs more permanent. Instead of patching and moving on to the next problem spot, repair crews will try to seal the cracks for good.

"We've purchased four new crack sealing machines since last fall," said Steve Hardiman of the Department of Public Works. "We've been out doing a lot more crack sealing work."

City officials aim to fix potholes within 48 hours of receiving a complaint. Despite the efforts to permanently patch the holes, there are some big ones still out there.

Damage to a wheel and tire could cost motorists as much as $400 to repair. A Shell service station on the city's north side said it has repaired plenty of tires and wheels torn up by holes on city streets over the years. Owner Ty Tarr said drivers with newer cars are coming in more often because their tire pressure lights have been set off, perhaps by potholes. In many of those cases, there are no problems, other than a low tire.

"It could just be the cold weather or a long time since it's been checked," Tarr said. "Make sure the air pressure is alright and you will probably be fine."

Indianapolis has $1.4 million budgeted this year for pothole repairs, and legitimate claims from owners who have had their vehicles damaged should be covered. Anyone who would like to file a claim can call 317-327-4039.

Winter Assistance Fund

Winter Assistance Fund

Mayor Greg Ballard and United Way of Central Indiana (UWCI) President and CEO Ellen K. Annala will kick off the Winter Assistance Fund drive by accepting $620,000 from eight local funders on Thursday. The start-up amount is nearly triple what was announced a year ago for the program to help low-income individuals and families in Marion County avoid having their gas or electricity utilities turned off during winter months.

Bracing for a record number of requests for help from people affected by the economic downturn, United Way and Mayor Ballard have set a new goal for the fund this year, the highest in the program’s 26-year history. Last year, the fund helped 1,204 households, including seniors and families with children, by raising more than $311,456 in assistance.

Here is a link to the United Way's Winter Assistance Fund Please check there for more information about the program and how to apply.

Employers: City Ex-offender Re-entry Program

Ex-offender Re-entry Program

City seeks to increase participation in ex-offender re-entry program
Employers encouraged to attend January 14th symposium

Each year, more than 5,000 ex-offenders are released from prison and return home to Marion County. A significant number eventually end up back in the correctional system. To break this cycle and help ex-offenders transition into positive roles in our community, the City of Indianapolis continues to partner with local businesses to connect pre-qualified ex-offenders with employers and job opportunities.

On January 14, 2009, the city will hold an employer symposium from 8:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. at the Indiana Convention Center. The event is designed to educate employers about the potential community and business benefits that go along with hiring ex-offenders. Local, state and federal government resources are available for employers, and tax credits are available at the federal and state levels.

"If businesses are able to hire even one ex-offender, it can go a long way toward battling crime and improving our neighborhoods," said Mayor Greg Ballard. "This program is about providing opportunities and giving ex-offenders the chance to improve their quality of life by being valued members of the Indianapolis workforce."

The City of Indianapolis hired 22 ex-offenders after a successful employment fair held this past August. A total of 519 ex-offenders attended that event, and at least 100 have been hired to-date as a result of the city's re-entry initiative.

Employers interested in attending must RSVP no later than January 9, 2009 by sending an email to desire2hire@indygov.org
