IHPC Rain Barrel Policy

Rain Barrel Policy

Greetings Historic Neighborhood Leaders–

It has recently come to our attention that several neighborhoods are undertaking efforts to teach residents about rain barrels and provide assistance with installation of barrels. While IHPC Policies and Procedures speak generally to review procedures for installation of utility and mechanical equipment on properties, they did not previously address rain barrels specifically. With “green” efforts expanding citywide, the IHPC has clarified the policies regarding rain barrel installation in historic districts. No certificate is needed if the barrel is to be located on the rear 2/3rd of the structure, not alter an architecturally significant gutter system and is not over four feet in height. Otherwise, a staff review and approval is required.

The goal of the policy is to allow owners to easily implement this “green” effort while maintaining the integrity of your historic streetscapes. If anyone requires assistance locating an appropriate location for a rain barrel on their property, staff is available to assist. We can be contacted at 327-4406. As always, we look forward to working with you and best wishes for a “green” Spring and Summer season!

Sincerely,

IHPC Staff

Rain Barrel Workshop

Save on a Rainy Day:
KIB Hosts First Rain Barrel Workshop

On February 21st from 9:00 am - 12:00 pm, KIB will host a workshop where participants will learn about the importance of rainwater conservation, learn to build a rain barrel from start to finish, and help manufacture rain barrels to be sold to the public. The proceeds from the rain barrels will go toward community tree plantings through NeighborWoods, KIB's program to plant 100,000 trees in 10 years.

In addition, each attendee will have the opportunity to take a rain barrel home! Registration for this workshop is limited and the fee is $45.00, which includes the rain barrel. To register, e-mail Sarah at sgrain@kibi.org.

Why rain barrels?

A rain barrel can save approximately 1,300 gallons of water during peak summer months.
Rain barrels reduce water pollution by reducing storm water runoff, which can contain pollutants like sediment, grease, oil and bacteria.
Rain barrels are inexpensive and easy to build and install.
