Mowing of Parks

Update from Dennis Papenmeier

To all,

Some of you have asked me about the mowing schedule for some of the parks in your areas. Please see below the official word from Indy Parks about the status of the mowing contracts that they are finalizing with their mowing contractors this week—all contractors should be out soon to a park near you.

"We are behind in mowing some of our parks this spring due to contract delays with our 13 mowing contractors. The good news is that we completed the contracts for 7 of those contractors last week, and they are out mowing this week. We hope to complete the contracts for the remaining 6 contractors this week so they may also proceed and we can get caught up on the mowing in our parks. Indy Parks crews have been mowing some of those parks but unfortunately have been unable to get to all the properties. Additional challenges have been the rainy weather and the contract stipulations that our contractors cannot mow our parks on weekends. We anticipate having the majority of our parks mowed by week’s end."

In advance of the contractors still being finalized coming out to mow the parks, Indy Parks maintenance is doing the mowing. If you have a park that is getting particularly high, please let me know and I will check into having Indy Parks get to it as soon as they can.

Take care,

Dennis Papenmeier

Volunteer as a Park Ranger

Trailsafe Program Kickoff

The Trailsafe Program involves recruiting volunteers to monitor a 1-2 mile section of the trail and report any maintenance issues, unsafe conditions, graffiti, etc, that they notice while using the trail. We are hoping to cover as much of the 6.9 miles of trail along Pleasant Run Parkway as we can with people that frequent the trail often. The trail stretches from Garfield Park to Ellenberger Park, with a large portion of it running through our neighborhoods.

Please email your interest to Annie Brown (ABROWN@indygov.org). They will collect information which will be used by the Rangers to do a background check (standard for Indy Parks Volunteers) which is why they need to collect the identifying information. They are looking to gather the volunteers by month-end and people will be contacted at that time. They will begin scheduling training sessions at that time as well. This is very exciting and goes a long way towards our goal of making the Pleasant Run Trail a great neighborhood asset.

Sincerely,

Jeff Miller, Chairperson
Public Space Committee

Mayor will visit the Cinco de Mayo Fesival

MAYOR GREG BALLARD TO APPEAR AT CINCO DE MAYO FESTIVAL

The Mayor's Office and ALMA (Association of Mexican Leaders in Action) are proud to present the 5th Annual Indy's 5 de Mayo Festival. The Cinco de Mayo Festival is a family friendly and oriented event that began five years ago as an avenue to retain and share the Mexican culture with the Indianapolis Community.

For the first time, the Mayor's Office has decided to fully support the Cinco de Mayo Festival this year.

"Indianapolis has a growing and thriving International Community and this festival is one example of many International festivals that will be happening this summer," said Mayor Ballard.

The Festival is also fully endorsed by the Mexican Consulate in Indianapolis. The celebration will have free health clinics, a children's area with inflatable games, Latin American and Mexican foods, live music and a National City Duranguense contest, which is a popular Mexican dance.

Although not an official holiday, "Cinco de Mayo" has been fully embraced by Americans everywhere as a day to celebrate the Mexican culture. People usually celebrate the day by enjoying Mexican dishes and drinks. Event organizers hope that everyone comes to the festival to experience firsthand the Mexican culture.

WHO:
Mayor Ballard's Office and the Association of Mexican Leaders in Action (ALMA)

WHERE:
Garfield Park
Raymond Street
(Between Madison St. and Shelby St.)

5 de Mayo Heritage
"El Cinco de Mayo" is a cultural celebration that was created to provide family fun entertainment, to embrace and celebrate the rich traditions of the Mexican culture. Cinco de Mayo is in celebration of a battle in the town of Puebla, Mexico in which youth took up arms to defend their own on May 5, 1862 to expel the French occupation during the Battle of Puebla.

About ALMA
ALMA (Association of Mexican Leaders in Action) is a volunteer-based organization that works specifically on searching for funding for Latinos to advocate on to college through scholarship opportunities. ALMA also assists with community projects that benefit the Mexican and the Hispanic communities in Central Indiana. Proceeds from the Cinco de Mayo event go to support scholarships through the Mexican Scholarship Fund administered by the Central Indiana Community Foundation.

Indy Parks

Indy Parks outreach

The Parks and Recreation Comprehensive Plan and Greenways Master Plan will be presented at the White River Gardens Building (Hulman Riverhouse) at the Zoo on Thursday, March 13th from 6:30 – 8:00. We want to have a good showing so they know we are interested in trails and connections in our neighborhoods (such as connecting the Cultural Trail to the Pleasant Run Trail).
