Only four days after being released from the Marion County Juvenile Detention, 15-year old Daniel Ferguson loses his life. An argument that leads to a fight, which ends in death appears to be the predictable story that lingers in our streets. After young Daniel was shot in the street, he made his way to a house in the 2600 block of East North Street, but collapsed on the porch and died before entering the doors. I envision him struggling to leave the scene of sudden hell in order to reach the safety of a secure home. After multiple gunshots he was only able to make it to the porch. Although there was no one present to open the door for Daniel that day, four days before his death there was a knock on another door; the door to Daniel's heart, and Daniel himself opened this door and allowed one to enter who would usher him into eternity in a few short days.
Volunteer Chaplain, Ken Turner, of the Marion County Juvenile Detention Center shares the story of his encounter with a stubborn and resistant Daniel Ferguson in an article posted a few days prior to his tragic death. Here are some of the moving excerpts of Daniel's story as recorded by Ken Turner a week before his death. Daniel's name was referred to as "Darrel" in the original article for privacy purposes:

The Drive-by Prayer Vigil salutes Chaplain Ken Turner and the many volunteers that invest their time into our young men and women at the Marion County Juvenile Detention Center. They are the foot soldiers working behind the scenes to reach the hearts of our future before tragedy makes them our past. My heart was saddened by another young man losing his life so prematurely, but it was made glad at the news that Daniel did make it beyond the porch and into the door of Life. Drive-by Prayer Vigil
"If Drive-by Guns can Kill, then Drive-by Prayers can Heal!"
14-Month-Old Sentenced to Death:
When I heard the recent news of the brutal death of 14-month-old Lilliana Goodmann, I immediately recalled 3-year old TaJanay Bailey who was brutally beaten November, 2006, and died at the hands of those who were divinely assigned to love her. TaJanay had been previously removed from the care of her birth mother due to neglect, however returned to her care resulting in her eventual death in the presence of one who was responsible for giving her life. Both TaJanay and now Lilliana are the innocent victims who, by nature, are made to trust and find safety and security in the care of their first love: their mothers. Unfortunately, in both cases, it was a live-in boyfriend who participated in the destruction of two beautiful baby girls who never had a chance to become young ladies and nurturing mothers themselves. Two live-in boyfriends who had not made a commitment to the victims mothers, so why be surprised when their fatal actions show no commitment to their offspring.
It's frightening to think that young perpetrators have moved from the streets into the cribs of the innocent. I would have to believe that somewhere in the perpetrators' lives you will find a history of abuse (a generational curse) which has silently and systematically made its way down to its latest victim. While we're focusing on the horrific acts of these young perpetrators, they are steady producing babies who are being trained in the school of perpetration without ever signing up for the class. And today we witness them graduating and carrying out what they've learned before they even reach full adulthood. Somehow we've got to reach them before class is dismissed; before they are given the rites of passage into a destructive world that finds its satisfaction in claiming another victim and producing another perpetrator. Baby Lilliana was sentenced to death with the following charge: she refused to eat; she disrespected. When was the bar raised on the death penalty, and when were executions carried out in the place where love and care used to reside?
It's time for the church to arise and reintroduce Sunday School with a new focus in mind: reprogram the innocent who are forced to watch and learn from illegitimate parents who have approved their own curriculum and teach it in a place we used to call "care." It's time to take a stand and present godly morals and family values that produce life; countering the lessons that are leading our young down a pathway of destruction.
Train up a child in the way he should go,
And when he is old he will not depart from it.

True enough, parents have the first responsibility for raising their children the right way, however, where parents are failing the church is responsible for succeeding. Our success is found in Jesus Christ and somehow we've got to get them into His hands before they fall in the hands of another.

Join us tomorrow, January 31st, as we meet to pray for families of victims Michael Kelly, Derrick Manuel and the surrounding community. Two more young lives have been taken prematurely. We declare Peace in the Streets, Safety for our Families, Life over Death, all in the Name of Jesus Christ who came to give us Life in abundance!
The weather is forecasted for a high of 34 degrees, so the vigils will be held outside. We will hold vigils inside churches near the sites whenever the weather is below 30 degrees. Dress warmly and pray fervently!
