Summer Jobs for Youth

State to hire 2,000 youth for summer parks work

The state plans to use federal stimulus funds to hire 2,000 young adults to spend this summer improving Indiana’s parks, trails and natural habitats.

The program, called the Young Hoosiers Conservation Corps, is for employment and training of people 16 to 24 years old.

The jobs will pay $8.50 per hour. To qualify you have to be 24 years old or younger and your family income must be at or below the poverty level -- approximately $23,000 for a family of four.

The positions will begin no earlier than May 1 and end no later than Sept. 30, 2009.

Bi-Lingual Specialist Position

Bi-Lingual Specialist
Child Care Answers

The Bi-Lingual Specialist will work under the direction of the Referral Coordinator and will assist both English and Spanish speaking families with their search to locate quality child care. The Bi-Lingual Specialist will train and provide technical assistance to Child Care Providers in a 4 county region. The Specialist will conduct outreach activities designed to inform the Hispanic/Latino community of Child Care Answers services. The Specialist will be responsible for translating Child Care Answers English Communication pieces into Spanish. The Specialist’s work week will typically be Monday – Wednesday 8 AM – 5 PM, Thursday 8 AM – 7 PM and Friday 8 AM – 2PM but may include some nights and weekends.

Essential Functions:
1. Provide referrals based on national best practices to both English and Spanish Speaking families.
2. Provide comprehensive training and technical assistance to increase the skill and knowledge of Spanish Speaking child care providers in Marion, Hendricks, Hamilton and Johnson counties.
3. Recruit Spanish speaking individuals into the child care field.
4. Review census date to ensure equitable services are being provided in Spanish
5. Conduct outreach activities to the Hispanic/Latino community.
6. Provide translation support to the Child Care Answers Staff to assist them in working with Spanish speaking clients.
7. Translate written Consumer Education material into Spanish.
8. Recording data into appropriate computer databases based on contractual requirements.
9. The Bilingual Specialist will deliver enhanced referrals for both Spanish and English speakers, with the support of the infant toddler specialist and the inclusion specialist.
10. The Bilingual Specialist could be involved in the PTQ functions, such as Intro Session in Spanish and Mentoring in Spanish.

Education:
• B.A. or above in early childhood education or related field preferred

Experience:
• A minimum of at least two (2) years of experience working with young children
• One (1) year of experience in training adults
• Experience in translating documents from English into Spanish
• Experience in providing outstanding customer service in person and via the phone
.
Knowledge:
• Fluent in both English and Spanish
• Must possess extensive knowledge of developmentally appropriate practices in child care settings.
• Demonstrate knowledge of child development and appropriate child care practices and knowledge of state standards and requirements.
• Must have knowledge of child development pre birth – age seven years.
• Must have the ability to teach, guide and mentor adults.

Licenses, Certifications, or Registrations:
• Must possess a valid Indiana Driver’s License and have access to reliable transportation
• Must successfully pass background and drug screening

Essential Physical Skills:
• Must possess ability to lift and transport equipment and supplies

Supervised Visitation Specialist - Part-Time


Location: Courage Center (Retreat)
Reports To: Director of Supervised Visitation

Purpose/Scope:

This is a part-time position (20 hours per week). The services will be provided to Marion County parents and children. The Supervised Visitation Program helps children have a safe environment to visit parents. It gives parents an opportunity to visit their children after the children have been remove from the home typically due to abuse or neglect in the home. Supervised visits are a step towards reunification when possible. We are seeking a self motivated, outgoing, organized and disciplined individual with proven experience and ability to respond appropriately to the diversity of our client population

Essential Duties:

• Responsible for completing all required documentation and meeting documentation deadlines • Supervise visits between children and there parents in our visitation offices • Assist in scheduling of visits • Attend all required meetings • It is understood that each employee follows and adheres to the professional standards as outlined by your perspective professional degree or license. • Perform any other duties as deemed necessary by the immediate supervisor * Ability to work independently * Ability to communicate effectively with all clients and staff * Proven/experience/ability to respond appropriately to cultural differences present among organization’s staff and service population * Ability to work in partnership with other team members * Has the ability to set limits and maintains the helping role of the practitioner and to intervene appropriately to meet the needs of the persons served or family members conviction about the capacity of people to grow and change.

Qualifications/Skills:

* High School diploma required * At least one year experience working with children * Good verbal and communication skills are required * CPR and First Aide certification required (can be received after employment) * Must have valid driver’s license and insurance

Intermittent Summer Position

The Indiana Department of Education (IDOE) is seeking motivated individuals that desire to assist the migrant farm worker population throughout the State of Indiana.

Job Description
Migrant Education Tutors will be responsible for providing targeted instruction to migrant students, ages 3 through 21, in order to meet learning goals. Tutors will teach independently at assigned sites such as migrant housing camps, homes, or other facilities. Tutors may also assist in informal translation and interpretation in Spanish/English. Other related duties may be assigned by the program supervisor(s).

Qualifications
Applicants must have completed 2 years of college coursework or have related experience, be bilingual in Spanish/English, possess a valid driver’s license, and have reliable transportation.

Additional Information
This position requires travel locally and regionally, as well as a non-traditional work schedule which includes evenings and weekends. Work sites will be individually assigned based on county of residence. This is an intermittent position available from May 26, 2009 through October 30, 2009 (dates negotiable).

Salary
Compensation for the position is $9.90 per hour paid bi-weekly.

"Hotel toiletries maker Gilchrist & Soames said today it plans to spend $3 million to expand its Indianapolis headquarters and manufacturing operations, creating more than 40 jobs by 2014.

"The company, purchased by San Francisco-based private equity firm Swander Pace Capital for $51 million in 2001, supplies bath and body products to luxury hotels and resorts around the world.

"Gilchrist & Soames employs about 120 people at a 125,000-square-foot operation at 1535 E. Naomi St., southeast of downtown. It expects to begin adding entry level through managerial positions in the next year." --Indianapolis Business Journal

Summer Youth Program Assistant

POSITION AVAILABLE

Summer Youth Program Assistant – will assist the Youth Programs Coordinator implementation of SECS’ 2008 Summer Youth Program “Youth Improving Communities.” Assistants will work directly with neighborhood youth ages 12-17 on life skills development, civic engagement, reading skills, and job-readiness skills. The position is for 5 weeks at 30 hours a week, 7:30am – 2:30pm. The program will consist of the following components:

• Attend Staff Orientation
• Assist with implementation of program components
• Supervise up to 20 youth at all program activities
• Provide mentoring throughout program
• Encourage and motivate youth in reading program
• Direct and participate in recreational activities and community service projects

REQUIREMENTS:
- Must be 21 years of age
- Have an interest in improving the community
- Must like kids
- Must be able to physically stand, walk, and be outside for long periods of time

Program Dates: June 23rd – July 25th, 2008
$10/hour
