New Cycle of ICBI Beginning in January

INRC Announces New Cycle of ICBI Beginning in January


Do you want to assume a greater role in your neighborhood? Are you looking for ways to enhance your skills? Are you looking for ways to meet residents from neighborhoods across the city? If you are looking for a more comprehensive set of trainings, consider enrolling in the Indianapolis Community Building Institute (ICBI). All participants of ICBI begin in Track 1 and progress through Tracks 2 and 3 of the curriculum. All classes are free for INRC members.

INRC is pleased to announce an intensive option for Track 1. Beginning in January, the 6 weeks of courses for Track 1 will be offered in two Saturday sessions, January 10 and January 17. This intensive option will allow busy neighborhood folks the opportunity to explore ideas and develops practical skills necessary for building effective neighborhood leaders.

Intensive Track One:
2 Saturdays - January 10, and January 17, 2009
9:00am to 3:00pm; INRC will provide lunch
Note: Participants must attend both Saturdays

Courses topics include: Servant Leadership, Tools for Stepping Forward, Intro to Asset-Based Community Development, Marketing Your Neighborhood, Neighborhood Inclusiveness, and Introduction to City Services.

Following the intensive offering of Track 1, participants can continue through ICBI with the regular 6-week offerings of Tracks 2 and 3, beginning in late January.

KIB fall neighborhood trainings

Keep Indianapolis Beautiful's fall neighborhood trainings are underway.

Neighborhood Security Profile Training

Tuesday, September 30th
6:00 pm – 8:00 pm

Join KIB and retired officer Kevin Kinnee to learn about crime patterns and recognize the physical factors on your block that will help or hinder crime prevention and safety for your residents! By the end of the training, you will be equipped to do a security profile of your own block so you can work with your neighbors to improve your block’s safety.

The training will include some classroom teaching, as well as a walk to a nearby residential block for Mr. Kinnee to demonstrate conducting a hands-on security profile. We have room for about 15-20 more folks, so please sign up today!

SAVI Level 1 Training

All SAVI Users,

We have a SAVI Level 1 How to Use The SAVI Website class scheduled for Wednesday & Thursday September 24th and 25th 5:30 pm – 7:30 pm at the Indianapolis Central Library.

Prerequisite: None.

This is a fast-paced overview of SAVI’s contents and tools. It will describe the data available in SAVI and how to use the search tools in SAVI to find the data you need. It will provide step-by-step instructions on how to use the tools that SAVI-Interactive provides for exploring communities, including community profiles, the “build your own custom community tool,” and interactive maps, charts, and tables. This module also explores potential uses of SAVI, including examples of how SAVI is being used by organizations in Central Indiana. This course is required for all courses in Level 2 and above.

Youth Programs

Youth Resident Leadership Facilitation 101


Making Connections Indianapolis is looking for up and coming young leaders to participate in the Youth Resident Leadership Facilitation 101 training, June 20 and 21, 2008. We are hoping that youth from the SE will participate. The youth will benefit from both days of training and also receive a stipend for their time. The training is on the 20th and 21st from 8 am to 4 pm, at the United Way building located at 3901 N. Meridian Street.

Please contact Patrice Duckett at 317-632-4599 for registration application to be returned as soon as possible. Once we have received the application, a formal invitation letter with logistics will be sent. Space is limited to 16 participants, and is first come first serve basis.

Through a progressive 3-track curriculum, the Indianapolis Community Building Institute offers an intensive, experiential program that explores ideas and develops practical skills necessary for effective neighborhood leaders. ICBI is designed for residents who are active in their neighborhood or are wanting to be active. Some examples include: block clubs, neighborhood associations, resident councils, homeowners associations, faith-based organizations, beautification projects, schools/parent teacher organizations and crime watches.

Homelessness prevention is the focus of volunteer mentor training to be held June 23rd at Immanuel United Church of Christ. Trusted Partners trains and matches mentors to build relationships with at-risk adults. Mentoring increases stability in the mentees' lives and the chances of them staying housed. Mentors commit to six hours of contact with their mentees for one year. Training and ongoing support is provided by staff. Greener World Youth Summit

With the push to go green and reduce greenhouse gases, IndyGo is encouraging local high school juniors and seniors to participate in the American Public Transportation Association's (APTA) first "Teening" Up for a Greener World Youth Summit, that will be held June 22-25, 2008 in Washington DC. This all expense paid youth summit will focus on the environmental benefits of public transportation, as well as how communities prosper with increased public transit services.
