Urban Farming Forum

Urban Farming Forum

You well may already have this marked on your calendar but garden enthusiasts will team up to host the city's first-ever Urban Farming Forum. This free event is scheduled for 5:30-7pm Monday, February 2, at Keep Indianapolis Beautiful, 1029 Fletcher Ave. 46203.

This program will be presented by Chris Harrell, Brownfield/urban redevelopment specialist; Sarah Wiehe, IUPUI medical researcher (and ardent gardener); Mathew Jose, urban agriculture specialist and Laura Henderson, founder of Indy's new Winter Farmer's Market.

Main topics will include -
  • health and safety issues that may confront when farming urban sites
  • how to mend soil if health concerns are discovered in the soil
  • what crops are best suited for Indianapolis and related garden growing hints
  • how to share bounty from urban gardens with neighbors or public at large by market or through not-for-profit assistance (churches, community gardens, relief assistance or urban schools with fresh produce).

Light refreshments will be served following the meeting to prompt discussion and help chart the course for next steps. Questions should be directed to Chris Harrell at theharrell@gmail.com or 502.298.2832

Spring will come and this will help ready us for the planning and planting ahead!

Soil Yourself

Soil Yourself is a great article about backyard gardening and food co-oping by a neighborhood on the east side of Indianapolis. It really causes the reader to have dreams about the day we have our own operating food co-op.

I know some will delight in gardening and others will delight in eating the food and all of us will feel closer to our neighborhoods as a result.

Volunteer Opportunity in the Garden

Building a Garden to Beautify
Laurel & Woodlawn

We have met with Keep Indianapolis Beautiful and have plans in hand to work in our garden, the lot next door to Emmanuel Baptist Church at 920 Laurel Street, that has grown into a strange assortment of flowers/weeds. Could you please put out the word that our two dates to finish the project are Saturday, August 23 (the day we dig and lay the pavers) and Saturday, September 6 (the day we actually plant). Both Saturdays are from 9:00-12:00. We need 6-8 volunteers on the first date, and about 15 on the second date. Lunch will be provided on the second date only. We will have plenty of water on hand to keep everyone hydrated. KIB has drawn up a really nice plan that we know will bring beauty and, we hope, serenity to the entire neighborhood. That's our goal! Thanks for helping me get the word out.
