About The Garfield Shakespeare Company

For more than 100 years, Garfield Park has been the cultural center for the Southside of Indianapolis. Performances of William Shakespeare’s plays presented in an outdoor amphitheatre setting have been an important part of this history. In 2005, area resident Joe Cook organized the Garfield Shakespeare Company in the interest of bringing Shakespearean productions back to the park. In December 2007 the company performed its first production, consisting of love scenes from some of Shakespeare’s most famous plays. In 2008 the company performed “The Taming of the Shrew” and “Romeo and Juliet.”
