Next week the Sierra Club will release a report about faith communities working on environmental issues called Faith in Action. It features the environmental activities of one congregation in each state. Indiana is represented by St. Luke's UMC.

However, I would like to show that there are a lot of congregations working to improve the environment in the Indianapolis area, I would like to get as many representatives from other congregations in the area as possible to talk briefly about what they are doing to help the environment (with visuals if possible). Please let me know if you or someone from your congregation would like to attend.

Shepherd Community Fundraiser

We are putting together a fundraiser for Shepherd Community Center. There are 50 tickets remaining for those that would like to come and show their support for Shepherd Community Center at 4107 E. Washington St., Indianapolis, IN 46201.

What: One Can Make A Difference Fundraiser for Shepherd Community Center

Where: The Oak Hill Mansion • 5801 E. 116th St. , Carmel , IN 46033

When: Thursday June 5, 2008 Silent Auction begins at 6:00 PM, Dinner at 7:00 PM.

You must RSVP by June 1st - There are currently a limited number of tickets available at no cost - due to the generosity of our event sponsors.

Why: Around 550 women and children have been integrated into Shepherd Community Center’s programs that were previously served by Indianapolis-based Wheeler Mission Ministries. Last February, Wheeler moved back to their focus, which is providing goods and services to the homeless, poor and needy of Central Indiana. Shepherd, whose mission is to aid families and children on Indianapolis’ near east side, has begun integrating these individuals into their existing continuum of care. This has created some significant funding needs for Shepherd. Our goal is to raise awareness of those needs and help off-set them through a fundraiser, “One Can Make A Difference”. We hope you will consider attending the fundraiser or donating directly to Shepherd Community Center and aid their mission to break the cycle of poverty.

New Location for Angel Food

Fountain Square Church of Christ is now a Host Site for Angel Food

I know that many in the Southeast area are familiar with Angel Food Ministries, especially since Shepherd Community has been involved with it for some time, but for those who cannot easily make the trip to Shepherd, especially those in the Fountain Square area, the Fountain Square Church of Christ is now a Host Site for ordering and distribution. This is a great way for anyone to save money on groceries. Menus are released monthly and a basic order costs $30. We accept food stamps and cash; there are no qualifications for the program. The Homeward Bound Walk is a statewide effort to raise funds to prevent homelessness in Indiana.

Robert Kennedy, June 1966

Following the program at the park on Friday, April 4, you are invited to attend a free screening of A Ripple of Hope. This independent documentary, produced by Anderson-based Covenant Productions, captures the historical significance of Kennedy's words that fateful day on April 4, 1968. Advised against appearing before an inner city crowd in Indianapolis the night Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated, Robert Kennedy delivered an extemporaneous speech that brought a sense of peace to the city. This film weaves together first-person accounts of that tumultuous day in 1968.

Free screenings will be held at the Madame Walker Theatre at 1:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. The 1:00 p.m. screening is geared towards community youth and will be followed by a panel discussion on tolerance, diversity and expression. The 7:30 p.m. screening includes a panel discussion which will focus on Kennedy's words and continuing the legacy and teachings of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. A reception will immediately follow after the evening discussion.

Admission is free for the event and seating is on a first come, first served basis. Doors will open for each screening 30 minutes prior to the screening. The event is sponsored by Locke Reynolds LLP, Pacers Foundation, Inc. and Fifth Third Bank. Additional partners include Covenant Productions, Anderson University, Dr., Martin Luther King, Jr. Park, IMPD Youth Services, INRC and Peace Learning Center. Trusted Partners prevents homelessness by providing trained mentors to individuals that have been recently housed and referred by a homeless prevention agency. These person-to-person mentoring relationships empower, educate, and provide life skills, hope, and on-going support in order to help people remain housed and improve the quality of their lives.

Through a progressive 3-track curriculum, the Indianapolis Community Building Institute offers an intensive, experiential program that explores ideas and develops practical skills necessary for effective neighborhood leaders. ICBI is designed for residents who are active in their neighborhood or are wanting to be active. Some examples include: block clubs, neighborhood associations, resident councils, homeowners associations, faith-based organizations, beautification projects, schools/parent teacher organizations and crime watches.

The first track of ICBI will be covered on two Saturdays at Fountain Square Library: from 9 AM to 3 PM with breakfast and lunch furnished. We already have almost enough potential participants to schedule the class. Please let us know of your interest so we can tell INRC that we have 15 enrollees!

Interfaith Symposium

The International Interfaith Symposium

will take place March 19 to 22 at the New Campus Center, IUPUI. Events will include a robust public conversation about Faith, Civil Society, and International Relations, workshops, presentations, music, and food, a film festival, and several book discussions. Continuous exhibits include information about Indiana's Sister Cities Partnerships, a Middle East display from Pulitzer Prize winning photojournalist Bill Foley, and booths from local nonprofits that work in the international arena.
