Summer Youth Arts

Englewood Summer Youth Arts 2008

Englewood Community Development Corporation has been serving the near-eastside of Indianapolis for almost 10 years. This summer we are pleased to offer a summer arts program for the youth of the near-east side. This program will run for 10 weeks from June 2 through August 7, and will be hosted by Englewood Christian Church (57 N. Rural St.)

We believe that the arts are essential in the nurturing of the human imagination and that the imagination in turn is essential to the transformation of our communities. If we cannot imagine that another world is possible, then we are doomed to maintain the realities of the present. We also believe that learning to work with one's hands is valuable for holistic human development, especially in our increasingly technological age.

This summer program will consist of two separate courses, one for elementary students and one for middle and high school students:

"Learning to See"

(Elementary School students – Entering Grades 2-6)

June 3-August 7 - Tuesdays & Thursdays – 11AM-12:30PM

Students will be introduced to foundational elements of art – color, line, shape, pattern, etc – and to a variety of mediums as tools to understand the spaces around them. Emphasis will be given to apply critical observation to their environment based on these fundamental principles. Encouragement is given for creativity, experimentation and devising new ways to represent their ideas.

Cost: $30 for the whole summer

"The Landscape of Hope"

(Middle School / High School students – Entering Grades 7-12)

June 2-August 6 - Mondays/Weds./Fridays – 9AM-12PM

Students will consider agriculture, gardening, landscaping and outdoor art as possibilities for reclaiming, re-using and beautifying land in the inner city environment. Through the summer, they will plant, cultivate and harvest crops, learn about gardening, food and water sources, participate in alternative urban gardening and work on large outdoor artworks. Students will also have the opportunity to assist with the work of a community-supported agriculture (CSA) farm northeast of Indianapolis that ECDC helped to launch.

Cost: $40 for the whole summer

INSTRUCTOR:

Brent Aldrich will be the instructor for both courses. Brent is a senior at the Herron School of Art, and has taught several art classes in Herron's Saturday School. He also helped establish the Community Museum Laboratory, an alternative art space in Fountain Square. This summer, his artwork will be featured in a store-front installation space in the Chase Tower, as part of Picture Windows, a public art project of the Arts Council of Indianapolis.
