You are invited to participate in the 2nd Annual Exhibit of The National Arts Program in Indianapolis!

The National Arts Program is designed to give artists of all skill levels an opportunity to exhibit their work in a professional manner and to compete for cash prizes. Judged by professional artists and visual art professionals in Amateur, Intermediate, Professional and Youth categories, the program is free to all entrants. Don’t miss this chance to be recognized for your creativity and be proud of your art!

Registration is required. The deadline for registration is 5 p.m. Saturday, May 16, 2009. Please visit www.indyparks.org or www.nationalartsprogram.org to download the official registration form. This year’s exhibition of The National Arts Program will be on display at the Garfield Park Arts Center from June 6 through July 5. The awards ceremony and opening reception will be 5 to 8 p.m. June 6, 2009. Cash prizes will be awarded to first-, second- and third-place winners in all categories, as well as Best of Show.

The program is sponsored by The National Arts Program Foundation in support of and in cooperation with Indy Parks & Recreation, the Garfield Park Arts Center and the Friends of Garfield Park, Inc. The competition is open to City of Indianapolis employees and retirees, members of their families and volunteers for the City of Indianapolis.

Art Competition - Recycling Bins

1st Round of Pedestrian Recycling Bins Designed by Local Artists Installed in Broad Ripple

Seven pedestrian recycling bins created by local artists as part of the Indianapolis ReArtFormation II competition are being installed today in Broad Ripple. The bins, designed to accept bottles and cans, are located along College Ave., Broad Ripple Ave., Westfield Blvd., and Guilford Ave.

“Providing opportunities for citizens to recycle plays an important role in our efforts toward citywide sustainability,” said Mayor Greg Ballard. “These pedestrian recycling bins are functional works of art, and I am thrilled to see them being installed just as the weather is welcoming more pedestrian traffic in Broad Ripple.”

Broad Ripple is the city’s second cultural district to have recycling bins installed on its streets. The first, Massachusetts Ave., had bins installed in October 2008.

“The proximity to shops and restaurants and the Monon Trail makes these locations ideal for recycling bins,” said Office of Sustainability Director Kären Haley. “Making recycling more abundant and convenient for citizens is part of the larger City-wide SustainIndy initiative, and these new pedestrian recycling bins are a step towards improving the quality of life in Indianapolis.”

ReArtFormation I was a contest to create art from recycled materials. ReArtFormation II was a call for designs to create the recycling bins now being installed. The second phase of the recycled art competition developed out of a partnership between the Broad Ripple Village Association (BRVA), the City’s Office of Sustainability, and Keep Indianapolis Beautiful, Inc. (KIB). In an effort to make ReArtFormation II possible, BRVA applied for and received a grant from the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) and is continuing to raise money for matching funds.

Currently, a round of ReArtFormation applications for additional pedestrian recycling bin designs is open and has been extended to April 15, 2009. The competition provides a $1,000 stipend for gathering materials. The application and guidelines are available at www.sustainindy.org.

Big Car's First Friday show for March will feature a bevy of local, regional, national and international video and sound artists. All of the music will accompany video art projections. The night will include a show of Herron video artists in Suite 214 next door to Big Car (see artist statements below), a program of experimental videos from other local artists in Suite 3 and 4 on street level (J. Andrew Salyer, Laura Salyer, Jim Walker, Flounder Lee) and a Microcinema screening (FATELESS, Color + Modulation, SLIDE, Hub Culture Retrospectives: Antarctica, Independent Exposure: Asthmatic Kitty Records Edition 2008, The Collected Films of Ryan Jeffery) also in Suite 214.

The night's musical offerings in Suite 215 (Big Car's regular space) and in other nearby spaces include performances by Butler University's Ensemble 48 (playing a soundtrack to the silent film "Man with the Movie Camera"), Marck Ferrari, Ben Ishmael Revival, Shiny Black Shirt, Sea Krowns, Ensemble 48, Actuel, Playboy Psychonauts, Stallio, Sky Thing and Tonos Triad.

Also in the street level space that night, Big Car also hosts the installation "Unified Fields" that features the interactive music and art of duo Mana2 (Jordan Munson, Michael Drews). This installation is a collaborative composition combining elements from the works Unified Fields (Munson) and Deconstructions (Drews). Themes and gestures from each work interact both with each other and sonic and video material emanating from several interactive stations positioned in the room. These stations will involve both motion and color tracking technologies. During the event, live musical textures will be weaved into the sonic environment being generated.

The event is sponsored by Microcinema and is a partnership with the Toby at the IMA.

This year, the stakes are high. Governor Daniels has proposed a 50% cut to the budget of the Indiana Arts Commission. After weeks of effective lobbying by the arts community, the House Ways & Means Committee responded by restoring all but 8% of the most recent allocation. But there is much more work to be done.

Herron School of Art and Design painters, Deanna Hensley and Robert Meko, are individually working on a thesis series dealing with suspended, singular objects, ambiguous space, and mass. Though a common thread, the way these issues are approached is what sets them apart.

Meko's paintings are large and figurative wherein the objects, the figures, are suspended by their own volition. Whether they are jumping, falling, or floating is neither clear nor important. The objects in Hensley's paintings appear deliberately hung, be it in reality or just appearance, by string or otherwise to liken them to ornaments. The space in her paintings is undefined, putting an emphasis on the objects themselves. The space is more ambiguous in Meko's paintings. Moving in, out, and over the figure, he interlaces deep and shallow space. The mass in his paintings mostly pertains to size, whereas the mass in Hensley's works concerns quantity.
