“Home, Spot, Figures” is a selection of works aiming to express individuality and loneliness.

“Art, in general, is a conversation…
between artist and paint, artist and the finished work, the painting and the viewer,” Duff says. “I see art as a marriage of passion and mind.”

Duff’s paintings seem peeled from the many folds in his mind. His heavy brush-strokes and urgent use of color excite the imagination to see common views in a new way.

Herron School of Art and Design painters, Deanna Hensley and Robert Meko, are individually working on a thesis series dealing with suspended, singular objects, ambiguous space, and mass. Though a common thread, the way these issues are approached is what sets them apart.

Meko's paintings are large and figurative wherein the objects, the figures, are suspended by their own volition. Whether they are jumping, falling, or floating is neither clear nor important. The objects in Hensley's paintings appear deliberately hung, be it in reality or just appearance, by string or otherwise to liken them to ornaments. The space in her paintings is undefined, putting an emphasis on the objects themselves. The space is more ambiguous in Meko's paintings. Moving in, out, and over the figure, he interlaces deep and shallow space. The mass in his paintings mostly pertains to size, whereas the mass in Hensley's works concerns quantity.

ALCHEMY art + aesthetics presents Mexican born, Herron School of Art student, Jennifer Hutchinson for her BFA Thesis Exhibition. Her work deals with the exploration of personal identity and the idea of personal time. It is a body of work that is deeply intimate, composed mostly of paintings, but displayed as an installation with objects that help compose the narrative of the work and allow the viewer to step into the artist's world.

I wanted to cordially invite all of you to our upcoming art exhibit at the Wheeler Art Center on Friday September 5th from 6-9pm. Just to give you a little background Indianapolis Downtown Artist and Dealers Association (www.idada.org) coordinates an art gallery tour with 25 downtown venues on the first Friday of every month. The galleries stay open later, there is usually some live music, and an opportunity to meet the artists. We have arranged to have a Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Indiana exhibit at the Wheeler Art Center, in Fountain Square! We will be showcasing the art work from our matches who participated in last year’s SMART program at the Indianapolis Art Center. The matches will be there to explain their work and talk about their participation in BBBSCI.

This is a FREE event. Feel free to come with your family and friends!

King Park Area Development Corporation is planning a free downtown neighborhood residential and business recruitment fair at the Harrison Center for the Arts in a First Friday art event scheduled for Friday September 5th from 6pm to 10pm. It is expected to attract around 1000 people and is celebrating all of the Urban Times neighborhoods, including Fletcher Place. The celebration includes four gallery exhibits relating to the urban living theme, 21 open artists' studios, live music, a public art project where neighbors will create 100 4ft lanterns which will light the Kennedy King Park later in the year, and a residential and commercial recruitment fair. It will be a great time of celebrating and experiencing community downtown. The Harrison Center is located at 1505 N. Delaware St.
