Big Car's First Friday show for March will feature a bevy of local, regional, national and international video and sound artists. All of the music will accompany video art projections. The night will include a show of Herron video artists in Suite 214 next door to Big Car (see artist statements below), a program of experimental videos from other local artists in Suite 3 and 4 on street level (J. Andrew Salyer, Laura Salyer, Jim Walker, Flounder Lee) and a Microcinema screening (FATELESS, Color + Modulation, SLIDE, Hub Culture Retrospectives: Antarctica, Independent Exposure: Asthmatic Kitty Records Edition 2008, The Collected Films of Ryan Jeffery) also in Suite 214.

The night's musical offerings in Suite 215 (Big Car's regular space) and in other nearby spaces include performances by Butler University's Ensemble 48 (playing a soundtrack to the silent film "Man with the Movie Camera"), Marck Ferrari, Ben Ishmael Revival, Shiny Black Shirt, Sea Krowns, Ensemble 48, Actuel, Playboy Psychonauts, Stallio, Sky Thing and Tonos Triad.

Also in the street level space that night, Big Car also hosts the installation "Unified Fields" that features the interactive music and art of duo Mana2 (Jordan Munson, Michael Drews). This installation is a collaborative composition combining elements from the works Unified Fields (Munson) and Deconstructions (Drews). Themes and gestures from each work interact both with each other and sonic and video material emanating from several interactive stations positioned in the room. These stations will involve both motion and color tracking technologies. During the event, live musical textures will be weaved into the sonic environment being generated.

The event is sponsored by Microcinema and is a partnership with the Toby at the IMA.

Audition Notice - Godspell

"Godspell" Stage Musical

The Stage Actors' Workshop will hold auditions for "Godspell” the musical by Stephen Schwartz and John-Michael Tebelak on Sunday, January 18, at 3 pm, and Monday January 19, at 7 pm, and Tuesday, January 20, at 7 pm. Auditions for and performances of the musical will be held at The Freemason Hall Theater, 525 N. Illinois St. in Indianapolis, 46204. The show requires five men and five women, ages 18 years old and older. Those auditioning should bring a song and be prepared to perform some basic dance steps. A keyboard player is also needed. The play will be co-directed by Dick Carlson and Bob Rini. Performances will be April 3, 4, 5, 10, 11, & 12, 2009. Some staff positions are available. Synopsis: The structure of the musical is that of a series of parables, taken primarily from the Gospel of Matthew. These are then interspersed with a variety of modern music set primarily to lyrics from traditional hymns, with the passion of Christ portrayed near the end of the performance.

The Stage Actors Workshop is a non-profit community theater company comprised of talented people who do theater for the love of it. Their mission is to bring to the Indianapolis public shows that are entertaining and educational at a cost that will not break the family budget. Masterpiece in a Day, Fountain Square Art Fair and The Wheeler Arts Open House return to Fountain Square on Sept. 27

The long-running free art and writing contest Masterpiece in a Day, supported by Southeast Neighborhood Development and operated by Big Car, returns to Fountain Square on Sept. 27. This year, the contest is again part of a big day in the neighborhood that includes the Fountain Square Art Fair presented by the Fountain Square Merchants Association.

The art and writing contests begin at 9 a.m. with day-of registration ending at 11 a.m. Completed artwork and typed copies of writing are due for judging at 3:30 p.m. Winners from both contests will be announced at about 4:30 p.m. All work must be completed in the Fountain Square neighborhood during contest hours.

This year's art contest features new categories designed to encourage participation by artists working in a variety of styles and mediums. Artists will be able to choose from:

Traditional/landscape (2D work in traditional styles)
Street art (graffiti style, outsider art, etc.)
Off the wall (sculpture, video, installation, all three-dimensional work)
On the wall (contemporary two-dimensional work).

The overall Best in Show winner of the art contest takes home $1,000. The four category winners pick up $600 each. The overall winner can't also be a category winner.

This year's art judges include Butler University art professors Guatam Rao and Elizabeth Mix and Paul LePree, owner of the Ultra-Pop, a street-art shop in Louisville.

The writing contest presented by The Second Story and Indy Reads features poetry and prose competitions with winners picking up $600 in each category and second-place writers taking $250 and third place taking $100.

This year's judges include poet, IUPUI professor and Second Story board member Mitchell Douglas and Travis DiNicola, writer and executive director of Indy Reads.

The Masterpiece in a Day music competition will not be happening this year, but musicians are encouraged to perform throughout the neighborhood.

The event also features fun for the whole family with activities for children throughout the day. The Fountain Square Arts Council will offer quilting, visual arts, storytelling, and music. Families can also take part in the group's ongoing art projects throughout the day at Wheeler Arts Community Classroom. There, children will have opportunities to share their thoughts through a talking wall, and also be able to contribute to a mural.

Other activities for the family all run by the Fountain Square Arts Council include:

10 a.m. to 12 p.m. quilting, outside of the Murphy Art Center.
Noon to 2 p.m. storytelling, Fountain Square Library

About our art judges
Elizabeth K. Mix, Assistant Professor of Art History at Butler University, is the author of two books and many articles on aspects of nineteenth-, twentieth- and twenty-first century art and popular culture. Her prior jurying experience includes "Sky, Blue Heavens," "Digital Concentrate," and "Does Gender Still Matter?" at Purdue Galleries, Lafayette and CICF (Efroysom Fund), Project Excel (Farm Bureau Insurance), the Indianapolis Arts Foundation's Great Ideas competition in Indianapolis. Mix has been a board member of the Indianapolis Museum of Contemporary Art since May of 2004. Her publications related specifically to exhibitions includes work for Purdue Galleries in West Lafayette, The Harrison Center and Herron School Project Space in Indianapolis, St. Louis Art Museum, I Space Gallery in Chicago, Tokyo Art Life Ltd., Japan, and the Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam.

Gautam Rao is Assistant Professor of Visual Studies at Butler University. He earned his MFA from the University of Pennsylvania in 2002 and his BFA from Boston University in 1999. His work is widely exhibited and has received national and international attention with a solo show at the Federal Reserve in Washington D.C., and a group show in Seoul, South Korea. His numerous distinctions include a 2007 Individual Artist Grant from the Indiana Arts Commission, the Susan Coslett Cromwell Traveling Fellowship, and awards from the Marie Walsh Sharpe Foundation and the National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts. He is a founding Board member of Herron High School and is on the Advisory Board of the Garfield Park Arts Center.

Paul LePree is the owner of Ultra Pop! located in the Highlands neighborhood of Louisville. He has been supplying Louisville with a steady diet of art and design books, designer vinyl toys, and other merchandise for over a year. From Low Brow, Pop Surrealism, Street Art, or Graphic Design, be it vinyl, paper, or cloth, if your art interests stray from the mainstream, Ultra Pop! is for you. Paul LePree spent his formative years in the wilds of the Florida Everglades pursuing the elusive Florida Skunk Ape. After years of mosquito bites and disappointment, Paul packed up his bags and moved to Kentucky. Five years later he decided to settle down in the fair city of Louisville and pursue his lifelong dream of owning his own retail store combining his love of toys, design, and pop culture.
About our writing judges

M. Travis DiNicola is the Executive Director of Indy Reads, a non-profit which provides free tutoring programs for functionally illiterate adults in Central Indiana. He is also the co-host and producer of WFYI Public Radio's "The Art of the Matter" heard on 90.1 every Saturday at 4 p.m. Prior to joining Indy Reads, DiNicola was the Director of Public Relations for Young Audiences of Indiana. Originally from Pennsylvania, DiNicola received a B.A. in Theatre & Dance and a M.S. in Art Education from Penn State University. Before moving to Indiana, he worked as an actor and a performance artist, presenting his work at venues on the East Coast. Indianapolis audiences saw him perform occasionally for five seasons (1999-2003) as Rowdie, the mascot of the Indianapolis Indians. He is also a writer, of fiction and non-fiction, and has taught at IUPUI, Butler University, and Seoul National University. He is a graduate of the Stanley K. Lacy Executive Leadership Series, and now represents his class to the LLA Board. Awards he has received include Best Graduate Research at Penn State, a Creative Renewal Arts Fellowship, an Indiana Individual Artist Award, WFYI's Community Volunteer Award, Broad Ripple Art Fair Volunteer of the Year, and the IBJ's Forty Under 40. He is married to Elizabeth Garber, owner of The Best Chocolate in Town.

Mitchell L. H. Douglas is an Assistant Professor of Creative Writing at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI). A cofounder of the Affrilachian Poets and a Cave Canem Fellow, his poetry appears or is forthcoming in Callaloo, the Gival Press anthology Poetic Voices Without Borders, The Louisville Review, and the Cave Canem anthology The Ringing Ear: Black Poets Lean South (University of Georgia Press ). A Louisville , KY , native, he resides in Indianapolis.

Wednesday, 23 July: The Mother Truckers + MFB | $6

The Mother Truckers are a kick-ass rock 'n' roll band from Austin, Texas. Their music is high-octane Americana, blending hard hitting electric guitars with soaring vocals and irreverent lyrics. They take the Texas mix of Country, Blues and Rock to a higher place with their creative songwriting and high energy live performances.

The core of the group is the singing songwriting team of Josh Zee and Teal Collins. Josh Zee (vocals/lead guitar) has recorded 2 major label records on the SONY/Work label as the singer/guitarist and songwriter for the Rock group "Protein". He toured extensively throughout the U.S. on "The Warped Tour". They also toured Europe and Japan as part of MTV Asia Summer Fest.

Teal Collins (vocals/ukulele/guitar) Teal's early introduction to music was through her dad, famous Jazz disc jockey Al, "Jazzbeaux" Collins. Teal has recorded sessions for Grammy award winning producers Narada Michael Walden (Whitney Houston) and Stephen Bray (Madonna). Teal has received Gold and Platinum albums for her work on Shanice (Motown records) and Third Eye Blind's album Blue.

As Gentleman Caller he manifests morsels of human nature, those spider-web corners, into songs exploring the obsessive qualities of gutted and love-bitten emotions. With an evolving cast of musicians, Childers builds stunning story-line tension of whodunit and whodid with arrangements echoing the chamber qualities of Galaxie 500, Big Star’s complex build, and the aching truth of contemporaries Okkervil River or Rilo Kiley.

Philadelphia indie pop act Dr. Dog is part of a long tradition of D.I.Y. pop oddballs who blend unapologetic '60s pop worship with lo-fi recording techniques and a complete disregard of current trends. R. Stevie Moore's quirky eclecticism is one obvious touchstone, as is their love of the straightforward pop hooks and tape hiss of Guided by Voices, Pavement's willfully fractured song structures, and the playful experimentalism of the Olivia Tremor Control and the Apples in Stereo.Dr. Dog began as a part-time offshoot of the more traditional Philadelphia indie rockers Raccoon, whose guitarist Toby Leaman and drummer Scott McMicken recorded the casual, sprawling 35-track set The Psychedelic Swamp as a duo in a basement rehearsal space over the course of several years, finally self-releasing it in 2001. As Raccoon ended, McMicken and Leaman transformed Dr. Dog into a proper band, with McMicken on guitar and Leaman on bass (the two share songwriting and vocals), plus guitarist Doug O'Donnell, keyboard player Zach Miller, and drummer Juston Stens. This lineup recorded 2003's more focused and poppy Toothbrush, which like The Psychedelic Swamp received a low-key, self-distributed release.When My Morning Jacket's Jim James, a friend of Leaman and McMicken from their Raccoon days, hand-picked Dr. Dog to open for his band on an East Coast tour supporting their first major-label album, It Still Moves, the band's almost nonexistent national profile began to rise. With O'Donnell replaced by former Raccoon bassist Andrew Jones and featuring Broken Social Scene-style guest spots from various Philadelphia friends, 2005's Easy Beat was picked up for distribution by the indie label National Parking. Following its release, the band toured again with My Morning Jacket and M. Ward and performed several well-received sets during the 2006 South by Southwest Festival in Austin. The stopgap EP Takers and Leavers was released in September 2006 in advance of We All Belong, which arrived in early 2007.

The Second Story, a center for young writers opening this fall in Fountain Square is celebrating its new space with a night of music, mingling and interactive text-based art on Thursday, June 5.

Please join us at 1043 Virginia Ave. Suite 4 (next to Alchemy) in the Murphy Art Center. We'll open up at 6 p.m. with acoustic music at starting at 7:30 p.m. and lasting until 10 p.m. This evening is intended to help us raise money for our nonprofit space (though no donation is required) and also get everybody together who might want to help with our great cause with their ideas and energy as volunteers.

The excellent musical entertainment on June 5 comes from local musicians Adam Kuhn and Beat Debris join Real Live Tigers of Austin, Texas and Redbear of Chicago. The fun will continue on June 6 when the Murphy Art Center is open the next evening as part of IDADA’s monthly First Friday Gallery Tour. Celebrate our new space
June 5

Please join us for a celebration and fundraiser at our new storefront space in the Murphy Art Center with a fundraising mixer and music event on June 5. We'll open up at 7 p.m. with music at 8 p.m.

Local musicians Adam Kuhn (above) and Beat Debris join Real Live Tigers of Austin, Texas and Redbear of Chicago in an evening of acoustic music at the opening celebration. All donations at the show go to benefit The Second Story, which will begin offering free after-school tutoring and writing workshops to students 6 to 18 starting in August.

In addition to enjoying live music, visitors can also participate in an interactive, writing-based art installation that will start that night and continue when the Murphy Art Center is open the next evening as part of IDADA’s monthly First Friday Gallery Tour.
