There will be free food, music, games and helpful information for the community at the annual Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department Southeast District Community Day on Thursday, May 14, from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. at Garfield Park.

This free event will feature:

~Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department Special Service Units: Tactical Air Patrol, Mounted Patrol, K-9 Unit, Motorcycle Officers, SWAT Team and the Bomb Squad.

~The Health Department, Fire Department and PAL Club will be offering valuable information for the community.

~Special appearances by the Indianapolis Pacers’ Boomer, Indianapolis Indians’ Rowdie and McGruff the Crime Dog.

~Indy Racing League’s “Racing for Kids”

~Children’s Bike Raffle compliments of Ernie Pyle VFW #1120

~Grilled hot dogs compliments of the Teamsters Local 135

12/22/08 Potluck with Indy Food Coop, bluegrass music, you & Simple Living Group of Indianapolis

You are invited to a potluck put on by Simple Living Group of Indianapolis at the Wheeler Art Center’s Theatre (Fountain Square - 1035 Sanders Street, Indianapolis) at 6:30 p.m. (setting up at 6 PM) on Monday December 22, 2008.

A representative of Indy Food Coop will share news of its founding a community-owned grocery store in the Near Eastside of Indianapolis. All attendees will have the chance to share their tips, questions and opportunities on simple living. Guests are invited to speak up to one minute on their ideas about vegetable gardening, edible landscaping, waste avoidance, communities,reduction of ecological footprint (carbon footprint is an aspect),book titles, organizations, events, and visions for environmental sustainability.

Schedule:
6:00 PM Set up tables, chairs, tableware, food, and information materials.
6:30 PM Musical performance. Set up tableware, food and info. materials.
6:50 PM Convocation. Dining as musicians perform
(please consider donating to the band).
7:20 PM Representative from Indy Food Coop speaks.
7:30 PM Attendees share their tips, questions and opportunities on simple living.
8:00 PM Improvisation. Examples of options: share raps, poems, and songs; informal small group discussions; departures, and clean up.
8:30 PM After clean up, do we continue discussions or other activities? If so, negotiate a location or locations.

Items sought for the pitch-in meal:
bread, vegan refried beans (if necessary, bring a can opener), peanut butter, vegetables, salad, paper plates, napkins, other food – particularly locally grown, silverware, cups, beverages, real tableware.

Please give us a heads up on what you will supply. Please try to bring your own reusable tableware (even though most will be supplied) to minimize waste. Posting of ingredients, where they came from and name of cook is appreciated.

If you arrive after 6:15 you will not be allowed into the meeting.
You are invited if you fit the following criteria:

NEED: Have lived in substandard, overcrowded or unsafe housing, paying excessive rent, not accessible to people with disabilities, or government subsidized housing. Do not own their own home and will be a first time homebuyer.

RENTAL HISTORY: At least 18 months to 2 years of good rental history and needs to be a resident of Marion County
INCOME: Steady employment earning a limited income for 2 years and/or verifiable Social Security or SSI income for 2 years that will meet our income requirements.
CREDIT: Must not have any judgments and any bankruptcies must have filing dates of discharges greater than 2 years.
WILLINGNESS TO PARTNER: To complete the 300 hours of work-equity in homeownership education classes & home construction.

Performing Artists Live/Work Space

LIVE/WORK SPACE FOR PERFORMING ARTISTS
In the Mass Ave Arts & Theatre District

A feasibility study - funded by the National Endowment for the Arts - will explore a plan to create live/work and performance space for performing artists in the Mass Ave Arts and Theatre District. Riley Area Development Corporation is partnering with IndyFringe to explore the idea in the Mass Ave Arts and Theatre District. The NEA grant will be supplemented by grants from The Central Indiana Community Foundation and the Local Initiatives Support Corporation.

This one hour Public Meeting will be comprised of interested community members and the performing arts community. The Study will be assisted by Artspace USA, a national non-profit firm dedicated to create, foster and preserve affordable space for artists and arts organizations. Artspace officials will visit Indianapolis on November 11-12 to conduct the feasibility study which will include project concept, market need, site suitability, potential to fund and sustain a project, and local leadership involving two days of multiple focus group meetings.

Ideas involved in the feasibility study include "affordable housing" for the performing arts community, 'black box' theatre and exhibition space, hostel space for visiting artists, rehearsal rooms, music studios, outdoor theatre space, community and commercial space. Additional ideas involve advanced architecture resulting in a LEED Platinum certification. Additional support comes from the Arts Council of Indianapolis, Indiana Repertory Theater, Wheeler Arts Center, The University of Indianapolis and IUPUI.

WFYI and United Way of Central Indiana are partnering to hold an event for persons doing family friend and neighbor child care. Those people who are providing child care in a home but are not 'in the system'. We hope to locate these individuals in order to provide some support and training for them. Many of them do not feel they are professionals but we know that the time they spend with these children is very important.

US Congressman Carson's wife Miriama Shaheed Carson will be our keynote speaker for the evening. Miriama is not only an educator, she currently uses Family, Friend and Neighbor care for her child.

Please help us locate these individuals by sharing this with colleagues, families and clients that you serve. I will be happy to bring you hard copies of flyers to distribute if you respond with the number needed and your address.

We will also have resource tables that evening so please let me know if you would like a table to share information with these informal providers.

Thank you so much for your assistance with this project. We would love for you to join us on October 14 as well.

The Community Programs Center at the University of Indianapolis would like to invite SE community members, neighbors, and residents to our fall Southeast Community Campus Forum.

The Forum is an opportunity to network with community partners and faculty, staff, and students from the University of Indianapolis. There will be very short presentations from Global Peace Initiatives, Second Story, and Big Brothers Big Sisters and how these organizations affect the SE community. Lunch will be provided.

The Forum will be held Monday, September 22, from 12noon to 1 pm in the Theatre at the Wheeler Arts Center, 1035 Sanders Street.

The annual Fab For Less Design Home Tour returns Aug. 23-24 with the expanded goal of transforming two city blocks in the historic Bates Hendricks neighborhood. This year’s event, which serves as a fundraiser for Southeast Neighborhood Development (SEND), not only showcases the renovation of formerly vacant homes, but also highlights the beautification of occupied homes, infrastructure, and community greenspace.

With the help of local designers and landscapers, SEND hopes Fab For Less 2008: Building Blocks for Affordable Living demonstrates how organized community development can create attractive and eco-friendly designs that are both affordable and livable.

“Fab for Less really gets to the heart of what we’re doing here at SEND,” said SEND president Mark Stewart. “What’s really exciting this year about Fab For Less is that it’s not just about doing two houses, but it’s about revitalizing two entire blocks and really engaging the people who live on the street to come forth with their vision.”

The featured homes — 1407, 1411 and 1425 S. New Jersey St. — will be open for tours from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Aug. 23 and 24. Tickets are $8 per person if purchased at SEND’s office on 1030 Orange Street during the month of August or $10 per person if purchased at the event. All proceeds benefit the SEND housing program, which focuses on redeveloping the city’s Southeast Side. For more information call (317) 634-5079 or visit www.fabforless.org

Each year Fab For Less selects homes with a low property value and renovates them to showcase home-improvement designs that are affordable, beautiful, and livable. The homes are then decorated, with a budget limited to $1,500, and opened up to the public as a fundraiser for SEND.

Fab For Less got its start in on the Southeast Side in 2002 as Deco’ Down before taking on the new name in 2005 and finding a permanent organizer with SEND. In 2005, Fab For Less highlighted what two very different designers could do working with identical homes. The 2006 event featured eco-friendly new construction and green remodeling. Last year’s event focused on interior design in the industrial loft setting of the Wheeler Art Center.

SEND is a non-profit community development corporation created by residents to revitalize the near southeast side of Indianapolis and to enhance the quality of life of its diverse spectrum of residents. Since 1991, SEND has invested more than $35 million dollars in affordable housing, commercial renovation, youth development, and greenspace improvements.
