Volunteers needed for building playgrounds

Help Build KABOOM Playgrounds at Schools 31 & 39

School #39 in SECO and School #31 in Bates Hendricks are receiving new playgrounds as part of the Kaboom program and the Lilly Day of Service. These playgrounds will be built entirely by volunteers and we could use your help! We need volunteers for both the prep day on May 18^th and build day on May 20th. Kaboom will provide the necessary training and all you need to do is show up ready to work! Breakfast and lunch will be provided for both days. We hope you can join us to build something that children in the Southeast will appreciate for year to come!

Save-Earn-Learn: Indy's Campaign for Financial Fitness

has increased the number of tax sites to accommodate more Hoosiers throughout Marion County. All sites will be open from January 24 - April 15.

We need your help:

GREETER/ASSISTANT (2 volunteers per day) Greet tax payers, provide an overview of site and services, answer general questions, assist with work flow, maintain queue, tax folders and waiting area.
KIDS CORNER (1-2 volunteers per day) Entertain children while parents have taxes prepared. Maintain and organize area when children are not in attendance.
SCREENER (1-2 volunteers per day) Screeners determine taxpayers' eligibility for service, assist individuals with intake forms, review and sort taxpayer documents, make referrals for financial services and asset building and organize tax folders.
*** IRS certification preferred but not required.

Volunteer to help deliver the Southeast Square News

The new Southeast Square News has been printed and will be out to the regular spots by the end of the work day today. I do, however, have a request that I am hoping people can help me with.

We have had some problems with the delivery of the paper being consistent when using community courts so we thought we would try and have neighbors deliver a good chunk of them.

If you are willing to deliver some of the newspapers on one or two blocks near your street, please contact me so I can mark it on a map.

If you have already contacted me about delivering in your area, go ahead and come in to pick up some newspapers. They will be in a box next to my desk (the front desk) at 1030 Orange Street. If you end up taking too many, drop off the extras here at SEND or at the newspapers stand at the library or the Fountain Square Theatre building.

Two Volunteer Opportunities

Hello all! Hopefully we are all rested up from our busy August! We have two important volunteer days that I wanted to encourage you to attend if possible.

First, we need one strong volunteer shift to finish out the esplanade on New Jersey Street. We’ve scheduled a final shift for Tues. 9/16 from 4-8. We’ll meet at the gazebo and as always we provide all tools, all we need is you!

Public Space has planned a clean up of Pleasant Run Pkwy for Sat. 9/20 from 9-12. Meeting location is Pleasant Run Pkwy and Prospect. We will provide everything, but if you could bring your own work gloves that would be helpful.

We are planning a Volunteer Gala to recognize all of the hard work our volunteers have contributed this year. Please mark your calendars for the evening of October 17th, more info to follow in the future but this will be an event you won’t want to miss!

Second Story Update

The Second Story

Hello

First of all, thank you for your interest in The Second Story. We're excited to have you involved. As an upstart organization providing free writing programming for kids, volunteers and other supporters are crucial. We can't do it without you. If you know of others who would like to help with the programs described below, please forward this to them or send me their contact info.

In the last several months, we've been busy getting our organization together, assembling an exceptional board of directors and making specific plans for working with kids this fall. Now, we have Phase 1, our in-school program, nearly ready to roll starting the first week of October.

Phase 1 involves taking a team of Second Story tutors to IPS School 15 on the Near Eastside to work with a class of 4th graders once per week on Friday mornings from October 3 until spring. Each week, this team — which we'd like to be fairly consistent from week to week — will help students better enjoy creative writing by working with them in group and one-on-one settings. The time commitment will be from 9 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. each Friday (except when school is closed for holidays, etc.). We'll prep in the hour before the class session, work with the students for an hour and then talk together about the session at the end.

That means we are looking to move pretty quickly on assembling a team. If you are interested in helping as a team member and have a schedule that allows you to be an ongoing part of this project, please let me know.

Phase 2, our after-school tutoring program, will be next. We want to get Phase 1 rolling before we take this step. But the hope is to begin our after-school drop-in tutoring for students of all ages before the end of 2008. Our plan is to start the drop-in tutoring by taking it to places where kids and families already go while we spread the word about what we're doing and while we continue to look for the best location for a permanent home for The Second Story as a writing center. We won't be opening in the Murphy Art Center as originally planned due to uncertainty with the building being up for sale.

Please let me know, also, if you'd be interested in helping with after-school tutoring. This would happen between 2:30 and 5 p.m. on weekday evenings. We'd like participants to have a regular day each week so we can build tutoring teams that get to know each other.

Phase 3 will involve adding writing workshops, field trip visits, online tutoring and other ideas to the mix. But we're being careful to take things one step at a time and do things right along the way.

In the middle of all of this, we are working on fundraising to support our organization. Our 501c3 application has been submitted to the IRS. In the meantime, Southeast Neighborhood Development (SEND) in Fountain Square is acting as our fiscal agent — that means donations to The Second Story are tax deductible. So, if you or somebody you know would like to support us financially, we'd love the help. Our mailing address, web address and my phone number are below.

We are also planning an event for this fall to bring volunteers and supporters together to talk about The Second Story and get your input on our future. I'll be in touch about that.

Volunteer Opportunity in the Garden

Building a Garden to Beautify
Laurel & Woodlawn

We have met with Keep Indianapolis Beautiful and have plans in hand to work in our garden, the lot next door to Emmanuel Baptist Church at 920 Laurel Street, that has grown into a strange assortment of flowers/weeds. Could you please put out the word that our two dates to finish the project are Saturday, August 23 (the day we dig and lay the pavers) and Saturday, September 6 (the day we actually plant). Both Saturdays are from 9:00-12:00. We need 6-8 volunteers on the first date, and about 15 on the second date. Lunch will be provided on the second date only. We will have plenty of water on hand to keep everyone hydrated. KIB has drawn up a really nice plan that we know will bring beauty and, we hope, serenity to the entire neighborhood. That's our goal! Thanks for helping me get the word out.

Urgent Volunteer Need - Fab for Less

Landscaping the New Jersey St Median for Fab for Less

We need your help

The landscaping of the median of New Jersey Street for Fab for Less is proving more time consuming than either SEND or Keep Indianapolis Beautiful anticipated and we need more volunteers. We are very close but we do need a strong final push to insure that Fab for Less, Building Blocks of Affordable Living, is as successful as possible.

If at all possible, please spend a few hours helping us landscape the New Jersey Street median. Or, even better, round up a few friends, co-workers, neighbors, or your church group to help us out.

So far the street looks great - new curbs and sidewalks, new street lights, painted gazebo, trees trimmed, new fencing, and renovated houses. However, we need help completing the crushed gravel path down the center of the esplanade.

Esplanade work days are 1-8 this Wednesday and 1-5 this Thursday & Friday. We will also be working Monday Tuesday and Wednesday of next week. We will be putting in the hardscape, which is not real difficult, just time consuming. It isn’t anything as strenuous as the digging like the past couple of weeks. We desperately need the help.
