Latino Youth Conference for students in grades 5 – 12

On Saturday, May 16, IUPUI is hosting a Latino Youth Conference for students in grades 5 – 12, their parents, teachers, and counselors.

This is a wonderful opportunity to learn, see old friends, and meet new people. Participants will interact with Latino university students from several area institutions, and with our guest speakers, Julio Cammarota of the University of Arizona and Michael Tapia of the University of Texas. In our breakout sessions, participants will learn about the stages of planning for careers and higher education, and about the amazing opportunities for bilingual bicultural professionals in Indiana.

The objective of the conference is to equip each participant with the foundation to begin to:

•Improve decision making skills focusing on education to determine which career is to pursue.
•Improve reasoning skills because the economy requires workers capable of making decisions at higher levels, who can think critically, and intelligently decide how to address these issues.
•Improve conflict management skills to help with decisions not to engage in violent or risky behaviors. promote positive behaviors, and prevent problem behaviors.
•Improve social skills through problem solving, self‐regulation skills, refusal, resistance, and coping skills.

These results will be based on attendance, participation, and the completion of their plan of action.

Great Science for Girls Initiative

We're looking for new partners!

MCCOY's Great Science for Girls project - a program that encourages young people to see that science is for everyone - is expanding. And that means your organization gets a great opportunity to offer high-quality, research-based science programming in your afterschool programs. Read more and contact us today to get started!

Last year, more than 10 local organizations implemented GSFG using the nationally recognized Wonderwise curricula. Wonderwise is a hands-on, minds-on approach that gives your young people an incredible array of options to learn science. MCCOY provides this curricula for you at no charge. What else do you get? We'll provide all the program materials, orientation, and technical assistance you need throughout your implementation. One of the best parts of GSFG is that you can make this program fit the needs of your organization. Want to do a Saturday science club? No problem. Need an enriching summer science experience? Sounds great!

With an emphasis on gender equity and inquiry-based science projects, we want you to join the rest of the GSFG team starting this winter or next spring. MCCOY is offering two “Advancing Youth Development” sessions this Fall, an intensive on Nov. 12-14 from 9 am – 5 pm each day and another series from Nov. 18 – Dec. 16, every Tuesday from 9 am – 1 pm (this is still tentative, but keep an eye on our community calendar for more details). This training is all about involving young people in every aspect of their programming as the true indicator of quality programming.
