We need energetic volunteers 14 years and older to help out at the ‘Little Hands on the Farm’ exhibit and’The Wonder Trail at the Indiana State Fair’ on August 7-23, 2009.

Volunteer Guidelines:
LITTLE HANDS ON THE FARM!
Below are the stations of Little Hands on the Farm. The children and their grown-ups will follow this path. You, our friendly volunteer, will help guide children through each station. Below is a description of each area and how many volunteers are generally needed to run each.
1. Greeter – Welcome guest and guide them to the Start Barn. (1-2)
2. Start Barn – Help children with their farming aprons, and hand each child a harvesting basket. Let them know that they are about to be farmers! (2 needed)
3. Grain Bin – Children will collect a bag of corn or soybeans. Help distribute the grain, talking to the children about feeding the animals, etc. (1 needed)
4. Chicken Coop – Kids collect an egg from the hens and place it in their basket. (Floater needed)
5. Apple Orchard – Children pick apples, either from the tree or off the ground. The apple goes into the basket. (Floater needed)
6. Stage Barn/Hat Giveaway – Every child who participates in Little Hands on the Farm receives a free baseball cap at the Stage Barn. (2 needed)
7. Garden – Here, children plant vegetable “seeds” in one part of the garden, then harvest them in another. Each child puts one vegetable in his or her basket. (3 needed)
8. Tractor Shed – Farmers place their grain into the feed bin, then pedal a tractor to the next station. (3-4 needed)
9. Sheep Barn – Children learn how wool is used for clothing while collecting a bit of it for their baskets. (Floater needed)
10. Dairy Barn – Kids are asked to milk Bessie the cow. (1 needed)
11. Farmer’s Market – Here, the farmers place the contents of their full baskets and sort their goods into the correct bins. They hang up their work aprons here as well. For their chores, they are given a Little Hands on the Farm dollar to spend at the Grocery Store. (1-2 needed)
12. Grocery Store – Children can use their dollar to buy such items as an apple, granola bar, or other healthy snack. (1-2 needed)
13. Runner – This station moves all around. The runner will have a homebase at the Farmer’s Market, emptying bins and taking the contents back to the appropriate areas, thereby keeping areas well-stocked.
Things to Remember!
•The exhibit is open from 10 AM until 7 PM. The first shift begins at 9:15 and the last one ends at 7:15.
•The target age for Little Hands on the Farm is 10 and younger. If you are a greeter, please remind families of this (especially if they have older children). We cannot keep people from going in, but we CAN encourage them to let only the younger children participate. Remind older siblings that they are allowed to help and observe their younger family members.
•In the Start Barn, only give baskets and aprons to the children younger than 10. The same goes for the free hats. Only give them to the children who are participating in Little Hands.
•Take breaks! It’s likely to be hot out, so be sure to stay rested and hydrated. There will be an area nearby where you can sit down, grab some water, and enjoy some shade.
•Have fun! You’re here to help the children and their families enjoy themselves. The best way to do that is to have fun yourself!
