University of Phoenix Donates Books

UNIVERSITY OF PHOENIX INDIANAPOLIS DONATES OVER 500 BOOKS TO LOCAL CHARTER SCHOOL LIBRARY

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (April 21, 2009) – The University of Phoenix Indianapolis announced today that it collected more than 500 books during its March book drive initiative that celebrated National Reading Month. The books will be donated directly to the Lighthouse Charter School in Indianapolis and its new library, which will provide valuable educational resources for students in pre-kindergarten through 8th grade.

“We are overjoyed that our book drive was a success and thank our students, faculty, and all those in the Indianapolis community who were gracious enough to donate,” said Anne Gillespie, vice president and campus director at the University of Phoenix Indianapolis. “These books not only will make a difference in many young lives, but also will be important teaching tools for our own students who are employed by the Lighthouse Charter School.”

Three instructors at the charter school are currently enrolled in the new education program at the University of Phoenix Indianapolis campus and are working toward their degrees. The education program is specifically designed to meet the requirements established by the Indiana Department of Education and is helping local schools like the Lighthouse Charter School build their teaching staffs, recognizing the growing need for qualified educators in Indiana.

“We are very grateful that the University of Phoenix has collected so many books to stock our new library,” said Amanda Koth, director of instruction for the charter school. “Providing this resource for our students is absolutely critical to increase their educational opportunities, since many of them cannot afford to have books in their own homes.”

The Lighthouse Charter School is still collecting books and materials for its library, and they are accepting donations at 1780 Sloan Ave. in Indianapolis.
