Peace in our Homes: A Call to End Domestic Abuse in Central Indiana
Mayor Greg Ballard joined community leaders today to launch "Peace in our Homes: A Call to End Domestic Abuse in Central Indiana." The initiative focuses on prevention of domestic abuse, coordinated intervention, response services, increasing awareness of domestic abuse resources in Central Indiana, and utilizing a newly-formed Domestic Violence Fatality Review Team.
"Domestic abuse is a community issue, and we must address it as a community," said Mayor Ballard. "There is hope and life beyond domestic abuse. People who are abused can get help, get out, and live life. People who abuse can get help, commit to change, be held accountable, and strive for healthy relationships."
The community-wide plan was developed throughout 2008 and early 2009. During this time, the Domestic Violence Network (DVN) with the support of the Mayor's Office and other leaders hosted a series of roundtable discussions on youth services, the civil and criminal justice system, economic justice and Hispanic outreach. A plan Steering Committee and four Task Forces comprising community leaders and roundtable participants identified gaps and needs in addressing domestic abuse in Indianapolis, Marion County, and throughout Central Indiana.
