Winter Assistance Fund
Mayor Greg Ballard and United Way of Central Indiana (UWCI) President and CEO Ellen K. Annala will kick off the Winter Assistance Fund drive by accepting $620,000 from eight local funders on Thursday. The start-up amount is nearly triple what was announced a year ago for the program to help low-income individuals and families in Marion County avoid having their gas or electricity utilities turned off during winter months.
Bracing for a record number of requests for help from people affected by the economic downturn, United Way and Mayor Ballard have set a new goal for the fund this year, the highest in the program’s 26-year history. Last year, the fund helped 1,204 households, including seniors and families with children, by raising more than $311,456 in assistance.
