Project Open Market Changes

"Project Open Market" Interstate Ramp Changes

Drivers on the city's Near-Eastside will notice several changes over the next few weeks as work on Project Open Market continues.

On or after Friday, October 31, 2008:

* The Market Street entrance ramp (also known locally as the "Ski Ramp") to southbound I-65/70 will close permanently around noon. At this time, the contractor will begin preparation for the demolition of the ramp. The demolition is tentatively scheduled to begin Monday, November 10.

* The new Washington Street entrance ramp to southbound I-65/70 will open around noon.

* Market Street at Pine Street will close to thru traffic with local traffic only from Highland Street to Pine. This closure will allow utility relocation work in Market Street from Pine Street to Davidson Street.

E-MAIL TRAFFIC ALERTS

Other traffic changes are expected as work on Project Open Market progresses. DPW encourages residents and motorists to sign up for e-mail traffic alerts at www.indygov.org/dpw/openmarket

Market Street Ramp Closure

I-65/I-70 northbound exit ramp to Market Street closed

If you use the Market Street ramp, this piece of information might be helpful for you to have, if you have not gotten it already…:

· I-65/I-70 northbound exit ramp to Market Street will be closed while road crews connect existing pavement with the new I-65/I-70 northbound exit ramp to Washington Street.

Date: Friday, September 26 – Monday, September 29, 2008
Time: 7 p.m. Friday – 5 a.m. Monday

This notice came to me from INDOTs Public Information Officer, so I suppose it is possible that there might be slight deviations from this schedule, it is their schedule, so I would consider this highly reliable information. It is nice to see this project moving forward.

Upcoming Road Work

LATEST "PROJECT OPEN MARKET" TRAFFIC CHANGES

The Indianapolis Department of Public Works (DPW) will be shifting the current Washington Street lane restrictions eastward for continued work on Project Open Market. Starting on or after May 29, 2008, the center three lanes of Washington Street will be closed from the interstate to just past Cruse Street (a few hundred feet east of Southeastern Avenue). As a result, there will be no westbound access to Washington Street from the Southeastern Avenue intersection (which also impacts Shelby Street).

Drivers on westbound Southeastern Avenue should take:

  • State Avenue north to Washington Street or Michigan Street

Drivers on northbound Shelby Street should take:

  • English Avenue east to State Avenue, north to Washington Street or Michigan Street

These lane restrictions are in effect 24 hours a day, for approximately three weeks, while storm sewer construction work is conducted.

In conjunction with this storm sewer work, utility work will also force the closure of the two southernmost lanes of Washington Street, from College Avenue eastward approximately 100 feet. These particular lane restrictions on Washington Street go into effect on or after June 2, 2008, and will last about a week.

E-MAIL TRAFFIC ALERTS

Other traffic changes are expected throughout the summer as work on Project Open Market progresses east along Washington Street. DPW encourages residents and motorists to sign up for e-mail traffic alerts at www.indygov.org/dpw/openmarket.

PROJECT OPEN MARKET

Project Open Market is a city initiative to spur investment and create economic opportunity on the Near-Eastside by removing the Market Street I-65/70 interstate ramp and building a new interchange along East Washington Street. The project, financed mostly through federal grant dollars, will open up Market Street for new business opportunities and create a more pedestrian-friendly corridor that will better connect the Near-Eastside to downtown Indianapolis. For more information, visit: www.indygov.org/dpw/openmarket.

If you have additional questions about the project, please contact the Mayor's Neighborhood Liaison, Tonya Beeler, at 317.327.5564.

Thank you for your patience as we progress toward the exciting developments on the Near-Eastside.
