Note from Major Myers about Burglaries

There has been a modest increase in burglaries throughout the city. To address the issue, a city-wide "Task-Force" has been established to tackle the increase. Please keep an eye on your neighbor's home. If you see someone/something out of place, please call us and we will be happy to come out and investigate.

Fall Break is here. Many schools are out of session. Please keep an eye on our kids.

Our officers made 168 arrests this past week, 35 of those arrests were for felony charges.

It has been a difficult time within our police department. I am sure many of you have followed the news and are aware that a handful of IMPD officers have been terminated for violations of policy and or criminal statutes. I want to reassure you that the overwhelming majority of our officers are hard working dedicated professionals who faithfully protect and serve our community. None of the officers who have gone astray were assigned to our district. If you witness questionable conduct by any of our officers, feel free to contact me personally at 327-6993 and I assure you that any and all allegations will be investigated swiftly.

On Tuesday, August 5, 2008 neighborhoods throughout Marion County will participate in the Twenty-Fifth Annual National Night Out: America's Night Out Against Crime.

National Night Out is designed to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness; generate support for and participation in local anti-crime efforts; strengthen neighborhood spirit; help form good relationships between the community and the police; and send a message to criminals that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.

Neighbors can participate by hosting a block party, or cookout, or pitch-in, or ice cream social, or flashlight walk, or neighborhood parade, or pizza party, or youth activities (games, chalk art, jump rope, hula hoop contest, watermelon seed-spitting contest, karaoke, volleyball, badminton or croquet) - simply anything that brings you and your neighbors together outside.

Don't miss this great opportunity to show your support for law enforcement and crime free neighborhoods; strengthen police - community partnerships; and celebrate neighborhood unity.

Salvage theft

Salvage theft
such as catalytic converters, air conditioning units are off the charts

Det. Jason Prendergast from SE District, his email address is 20106@indygov.org has been the main police officer in the city leading the charge against this problem. I just talked to him on the phone about what could neighborhood people do to help in this fight. And one of the big problems he is running into is that even when the police are able to catch these thieves, the victims choose not to prosecute because they have already been compensated through their insurer. The problem with this is it lets the thieves go to steal again instead of being locked up. It is critical for victims to be willing to prosecute these crimes so that we can get the perpetrators off the street.

Please tell everyone through your neighborhood organizations, how critical it is to follow through even though you may already have gotten paid for the loss.

A Note from Major Myers

IMPD Activities

Major Myers writes that last "Saturday, many of our resources were used to evacuate residents and protect motorists during the flood. The southern portion of our district was hit very hard. Our Forward command, on East Stop 11 Road, was open the majority of the day. Along with myself and Captain Terheide, we had Fire Chiefs, Emergency management officials, the Red Cross, DOT, and many others working together to maintain safety in the neighborhoods.

This past weekend, we also conducted a city-wide prostitution sweep. 45 arrests were made in the sweep, many of them along East Washington Street.

The positive momentum continues to build throughout our district. I have had the pleasure of meeting so many residents this past week. Working together, we will have a tremendous impact on the issues that we face.

A Note from IMPD

A Note from IMPD's Major Cliff Myers..........

You may have heard in the news that about 2,300 Marines from the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit -- based in Camp Lejuene, N.C. -- will be using various locations throughout the city for their Realistic Urban Training Exercise from June 4 to 19.

While some of the activity will take place aboard Camp Atterbury, residents in many areas can expect to see helicopters flying overhead, military vehicles on the roads and Marines patrolling on foot.

Landing sites include Eastgate Mall, Brookside Park, Ellenberger Park, Christian Park, Southeastway Park, Bush Stadium and Douglass Park. Please keep an eye out for our armed forces.

School is out for the summer.

Important Notice from Chief Myers

Special Caution from the Chief

City-wide, there have been four sexual assaults over the last several months involving a white male, between the ages of 30-45, 5’8” to 6’00”, heavy build – 250 lbs plus, with very short hair impersonating a police officer. The man drives a black four door mid-size car. The man has not had any type of identification. As a reminder, when being confronted by someone who identifies themselves as an undercover officer, please trust your instincts, if something about an “undercover” officer makes you feel uncomfortable or suspicious, you should ask to see a badge or other identification. All of our police officers are required to carry departmental identification. When in doubt, call 911.



This week, Southeast District officers arrested 162 people on our district, 41of those arrests were for felony charges.

The annual Cinco De Mayo Celebration will be held in Garfield Park Saturday afternoon 5/3, from noon until 8pm.

New Southeast District Commander

Hello!

By way of introduction, I am Cliff Myers. I was appointed as your Southeast District commander last Friday. As a 20 year member of the police department, I started my career in 1988 with the Indianapolis Police Department. My first nine years were spent on the eastside of Indianapolis as a patrol officer. I have worked in Narcotics, general investigations, SWAT, Administration, Covert Investigations Commander, and most recently as the Assistant Chief of Operations. I am a south-side resident and my wife and I have three children.

The Southeast-side of Indianapolis is a wonderful place to live and raise a family, but we do have much work to do to stem the tide of crime. Our job is to work closely with you and provide you the service that you expect and deserve.

Our dedicated Crime Watch staff is made up of Officer Jo Starrett (327-6366) and Ms. Ann Westropp (327-6365). Jo and Ann are a tremendous resource for you. We want and need your support.

Police Academy for Citizens

IMPD Citizen’s Academy Announced

The 2008 Indianapolis Marion County Police Department Citizen’s Academy will run from April 1st to June 16th on Tuesdays from 6:30 –10:30p.m. at the IMPD Training Academy at 901 N. Post Road. This academy is free and allows citizens to take a crash course in law enforcement. Topics will include the use of force, communications, criminal law, and several special unit presentations. Citizens will also participate in ride-alongs with officers. Applicants must be 18 years of Age and live or work in Marion County. They will also be subject to a background check. Applications are available at Southeast District Headquarters at 1150 S. Shelby.
