Relay for Life to fight Cancer

Saint Florian Center is partnering with Howe High School “Relay for Life” to fight Cancer

May 30 – 31, 2009
10 am – 10 am

The Saint Florian Center will pay a $10.00 registration fee for each of the Saint Florian Center partners to have a team during the "Relay for Life" event. Each Partner must select a Team Captain to recruit members from your organization, church, family and friends to participate and support the event. I need you to promote the event, collect $10.00 from each team member (even if they cannot attend) to support the event. The SFC will email forms to fill out for each team. Each Partner is encouraged to make this a family affair:
 Bring your tent, chairs, music, and grill to cook out
 Spend the night (or stay as long as you can)
 Bring games (Frisbee’s, cards, soccer, etc.)
Saint Florian Center will:
 Provide a tent for the first aid station
 Bring a Bounce House & Games for everyone to use
 Provide a SFC Tent (Partners…please bring your own…let me know if you need a tent)
 Encourage all partners to provide volunteers to help set up; clean up; assist with entertainment and games.
 Table set up to promote World No Tobacco Day.
 Have Fun while supporting this GREAT cause!

What: The Second Story Underground

Where: Harrison Center for the Arts, 1505 North Delaware St.
Cost: $8, $5 for students

Two entertaining Indianapolis writers and an eclectic musical trio are supporting the efforts of The Second Story with a fundraiser event this Friday, March 13 at the Harrison Center for the Arts. Young adult fiction author John Green, whose novel Paper Towns debuted at No. 5 on the New York Times best-seller list this fall, will read his work as part of an evening of literary fun complete with live music, conversation and food — as well as beer and wine for those over 21. Fiction writer and journalist Sarah Layden will also share her words. And Tonos Triad, a local classical- and jazz-influenced trio will provide music while the audience mingles. Both writers and the musicians are donating their time to support The Second Story. Our youth-focused educational nonprofit, which recently published a book of short stories about the city written by fourth-graders at IPS School 15, is raising $5,000 to meet a goal for a matching grant from The Indianapolis Foundation. Copies of the book, Hot Baked Cheetos and Other Things We Like About Indianapolis, will be available for purchase at the event. While the event is open for all ages, it is most suitable for teens and above.


Helping at Kaleidoscope Youth Center

We begin on Monday, March 16 at 4 p.m. at Kaleidoscope Youth Center at 4186 Broadway Street. www.kaleidoscopeyouth.org

We'll be doing writers workshop with the kids, stand-alone exercises that generate short pieces of writing each week with the objective of preparing for and then completing a long-term project that will become a small published book.

On March 16, we'll meet at the center at 4 p.m. for a brief orientation with Kaleidoscope and prep for our first lesson before we begin working with the kids at 4:30. The first session will be when we meet the kids, give them a writing attitude survey and do a fun writing activity so we have a writing sample for all. Going forward, we'll meet at 4 p.m. each Monday to prep for that week's lesson and work with kids from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. I'll also send out weekly lesson info in advance via email.

We'll pair new volunteers with experienced ones for the first session or two and we'll also do some outside prep for new volunteers after the first session. We'll work with the students for eight weeks March 16, March 23, April 6, April 13, April 20, April 27 and May 4 -- then we will have a celebration/reading event on the week of May 11. We will be working with 10 students each Monday in grades K-6. We hope to have the same volunteers there each week so we can be paired with the same kid or kids for most or all of the entire eight weeks.


Helping at the Boys & Girls Club in Fountain Square

In late March or early April (we are still working out the exact start date) we'll also begin with a similar after-school program at the Lilly Boys & Girls Club on State Street in Fountain Square. This will be on Wednesday nights from 3:30 until 5 p.m.

Mimosas for Meredith

Dine at Palomino – help an industry employee

Joshua Eymann and Meredith Goldsmith met four years ago and, as they say, the rest is history. Meredith is an HR specialist for Gene B. Glick and Josh is the Dinner Sous Chef at Palomino, downtown. They were married October 24, 2008. Just before Christmas, they received a call from Meredith's doctor and were told it was imperative that they come to the hospital. Later that day, after numerous tests, Meredith and Josh found that she had Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia; a malignancy in the bone marrow. Meredith spent the next three weeks in the hospital undergoing chemotherapy. Presently, her prognosis is good however the medication that Meredith takes seven times a day is $2000 a month after insurance. She will take this medication for the next two years.

Join the Palomino Sunday, March 1, 2009 for Mimosas for Meredith, a benefit brunch for Meredith and Josh Eymann. The buffet brunch, offered 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. includes traditional breakfast items and some of Palomino's signature dishes including Grilled Maple Chicken Salad, Red King Crab Dip, New Orleans Style French Toast, Cold Smoked King Salmon with dill remoulade and Rigatoni Bolognese. Complimentary mimosas are included in the $20 charge for adults. Cost for children under 12 years of age is $10. Children under 5 eat free. Additional adult beverages may be purchased.

Palomino purveyors have donated products and the crew will donate their time so that 100% of all funds collected during the event will help offset Meredith's medical bills. Come enjoy great food and drinks while helping two wonderful young people as they start their lives together.

On February 21st The South New Jersey street Esplanade Association is giving a Chili Cookoff from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Maria's Pizza at 1106 Prospect Avenue (a few doors east of the Fountain Square Library.) The Chili is free with the hope of a donation to the Association to help maintain the eplanade that was redone last year.

This is why all south east residents should come and eat chili.

The New Jersey street project has received so much positive attention from all over the city for neighborhood volunteerism that it has become a magnet for redevelopment funds and homeowner grants for the entire south east area. Already a housing trust has also earmarked an additional $300,000 in grant money for renovation aid to homeowners on streets surrounding New Jersey street. The New Jersey Street Esplanade joins The Simon Cancer Center, and the White River State Park in receiving the coveted Monumental Award. This project has broken down the old thinking that development is only really positive on the North side of Indianapolis. This spring it needs to look better than ever because everyone is driving down it to see the huge transformation. Come check it out.

So why should you care?

Because you stand to benefit. Money is tighter than ever. South New Jersey Street, Bates-Hendricks, SEND, KIBI, and Fountain Square have shown Indianapolis that this side of town has a great deal to offer. We have to fight for our share of the stimulous money. Projects like the New Jersey street Esplanade need to look sharp this spring. It takes money for mulch and grass seed and fertilizer.

Another reason you should also care is because there is a lot more to do in this area and money to go around. The money will go to the neighborhoods that get our of their recliners and get out on the street taking on positive projects that improve the area. Show your spirit. Sweep your street. Pick up some trash and then come eat some chili.

Here is how it works.

Maria's is donating its space. Several of the best cooks in the Bates-Hendricks area are duking it out over bragging rights to the best chili on the southeast side. You will be the judge. We will let you taste each one, vote, and then sit down and have a bowl of chili and some homemade dessert for lunch. Hopefully you will make a donation.

The New Jersey street project showed Indianapolis that our residents are proud, motivated, and have something to offer. We finally have some prositive momentum for change and money coming in and the southeast. Come eat chili, vote, donate, and show Indianapolis that the Southeast is a force to be reconed with.

American Legion Family Legacy Walk

MAYOR TO PARTICIPATE IN AMERICAN LEGION FAMILY LEGACY WALK

On Thursday, Mayor Greg Ballard will participate in The American Legion's Inaugural Legacy Walk, an event organized by the American Legion Family Employees League to reflect on the lives lost on Sept. 11, 2001. The Legacy Walk is non-competitive, free and open to the general public.

At the event, the American Legion will be accepting donations to benefit The American Legion Legacy Scholarship, which benefits children of military personnel killed since Sept. 11, 2001, and the American Legion Auxiliary's National President's Scholarship Fund, which provides assistance to children of any service member.

Take I-70 to Airport express way, Get off at Executive Dr. exit. At the top of the exit, keep going to the right until the stop sign. At this corner there will be multiple motels. Turn right at the stop sign and follow the road around,.almost to the end. The building is marked 2910 on the left side of the front of the building. Turn right at the sign that says 2920 and go to the back of the building. Turn left and the first ramp on the left is us.

There will be signs. We have about 18,000 sq ft of items, Clothing, all sizes, including maternity, men's and women's suits, coats, jackets, dress clothes, slacks, jeans, shoes, office supplies, and desk and file cabinets along with desk chairs. Glassware, linens, holiday items, and furniture. We truly have something for everyone. We also have some antiques and retro items.
