Who is Abitibi Bowater and why is our program free?
Abitibi Bowater is the world's largest newsprint manufacturer. 100% of all the paper collected in our Paper Retriever bins is recycled and turned into newsprint which we sell. One in every two newspapers is printed on Abitibi Bowater's paper.
You may also notice our bins in various retail store parking lots. These stores are "host" locations for non-for-profit organizations. For example, the tonnage collected in the Kroger Paper Retriever bins supports Keep Indianapolis Beautiful. At the end of every month, Abitibi Bowater sends a check to the participating non-for-profit organizations for the paper tonnage collected in the bin.
What can you do to help support your neighborhood paper recycling program?
Deposit your newspapers, magazines, catalogs, office paper, school paper, art paper, envelopes, and junk mail in the Paper Retriever bin every week. Encourage your place of employment to recycle their paper and deposit it in the bin. Every ton collected means money for your neighborhood organization.
Why is recycling paper important?
42% of household trash is paper! Recycling paper helps clean the environment. According to the American Lung Association, Indianapolis was ranked #11 in the country for having poor air quality. A full Paper Retriever bin weighs between 1 to 2 tons. Every ton of paper recycled in our bin prevents 60 lbs. of air pollution from entering the environment, saves 17 trees, 390 gallons of oil, 3.3 cubic yards of landfill space, 7,000 gallons of water, and 4,102 kwh of electricity.
Volunteers are needed for two to four hours, one weekend day in July (Date to-be-determined) to help with the Fountain Square Community Paper Drive. I think this is a great way to not only divert paper from the landfills, but to help raise money for the neighborhood with out having to dip into the wallet !!
