It all starts with an innocuous notice in the mail. Soon you are thrown into a bewildering process of rezonings & variances and the "land use decision-making" process. What does it all mean? What are the rules? How can one person have an impact? Find out these answers and more from Tammara Tracy, Principal Planner with the City of Indianapolis, with 19 years experience in this explosive field.

Introductions to Web 2.0
Thursday, July 31, 6:00-8:30pm

Twitter. Facebook. Wordpress. Flickr. The web can be a confusing series of websites and acronyms, but with a little guidance and the proper training, it can be easy. This course, led by John Fox with New Media Design and a resident of West Indianapolis, will guide you through all the web has to offer and how your neighborhood organization can benefit from this emergent technology? Among the topics will be: podcast production; basics of web design and hosting; applications and platforms; and, using online photography.

Art as Engagement
Thursday, August 7, 6:00-8:00pm

We've all seen them around town - murals, painted trash cans, signs, and more. In addition to identifying a place with their artwork, neighborhood leaders have created innovative art projects, all while engaging others in their neighborhoods. At this session, talk with various neighborhood leaders who have leveraged the impact of public art in their neighborhoods.

* All classes will be held at INRC, 1802 Illinois Street.

Book Drive

Books for the
Pre-kindergarten College Program

CHAPSS is conducting a pre-kindergarten college program at SENSE from June 15 through June 27. Part of the goal is to get books in the hands of the children every day that they are in the program. The children will be taking the books home to keep. CHAPSS is looking for new or gently used books that are appropriate for kindergarteners.

Approximately 250 books are needed, so please consider reducing the clutter in your school-age child's room by donating to this program.

Summer Youth Program Assistant

POSITION AVAILABLE

Summer Youth Program Assistant – will assist the Youth Programs Coordinator implementation of SECS’ 2008 Summer Youth Program “Youth Improving Communities.” Assistants will work directly with neighborhood youth ages 12-17 on life skills development, civic engagement, reading skills, and job-readiness skills. The position is for 5 weeks at 30 hours a week, 7:30am – 2:30pm. The program will consist of the following components:

• Attend Staff Orientation
• Assist with implementation of program components
• Supervise up to 20 youth at all program activities
• Provide mentoring throughout program
• Encourage and motivate youth in reading program
• Direct and participate in recreational activities and community service projects

REQUIREMENTS:
- Must be 21 years of age
- Have an interest in improving the community
- Must like kids
- Must be able to physically stand, walk, and be outside for long periods of time

Program Dates: June 23rd – July 25th, 2008
$10/hour
