Re: MEETING NOTICE

There will be a meeting of the Rules and Public Policy Committee of the City-County Council on Tuesday, May 12, 2009, at 5:30 p.m. in Room 260 of the City-County Building. It is anticipated that the following items may be considered by the Committee:

PROPOSAL NO. 136, 2009 - amends the Code with respect to appropriations of funds from federal stimulus grants

PROPOSAL NO. 175, 2009 - reviews the 2009 tax rates, tax levies and budgets of certain civil taxing units and adopts recommendations with respect to such tax rates, levies and budgets

PROPOSAL NO. 176, 2009 - approves the issuance of Waterworks District Net Revenue Bonds in an aggregate principal amount of refunding bonds not to exceed $540,000,000 and other actions in respect thereto

PROPOSAL NO. 177, 2009 - amends the Code to establish a new city department of code enforcement, to consolidate into two sections the various fees to be collected by the new department, and to make corresponding technical corrections

PROPOSAL NO. 178, 2009 - amends the Code by adding provisions to clarify Chapter 531 regarding regulation of pit bulls, including registration and sterilization, better humane standards for the care and treatment of all dogs, and requiring all dogs and cats adopted out of the animal care and control system to be altered (*No public testimony or public comment will be taken on this proposal at this meeting, but a committee hearing schedule and process for public input will be announced by the committee chair.)

The Committee may consider any pending business in accordance with the Rules of the City-County Council.

Digital Storytelling is a powerful and accessible media that gives neighbors a dynamic platform to advocate for change, promote celebration, and exhibit community identity. This Digital Storytelling course will provide participants with an introduction to many of the free resources necessary to create digital stories. In addition, participants will walk through the steps of successfully creating a moving digital story. Through this course, participants will walk away with the skills and knowledge to create digital stories to be shared for years to come!

YOUTH WORKS INDY - May 8 Deadline

YOUTH WORKS INDY

The Indianapolis Private Industry Council (IPIC) is investing $3.2 million in YouthWorks Indy, a summer employment and education program for 575 Marion County residents ages 16 to 24 from June 8 through July 31, 2009 depending upon the type of program selected. Funding for the program is provided by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.

The program focuses on three areas: education, employment, and work readiness. It is open to 350 in-school youth currently enrolled in high school; 175 youth who are out of school, but seeking a GED or credentials; and 50 high school students who are interested in pursuing health care careers.

Participants will spend part of their time in the classroom and part of their time gaining work experience at local companies and organizations. The program will provide an hourly wage for work of $8.50 (limited to $170/week) and a stipend of $50 per educational session (up to $250/week) to cover transportation and meals.

On-line applications will be accepted between April 27, 2009 and May 8, 2009. YouthWorks Indy participants will be chosen by May 15, 2009, based on priority of service to Veterans, past, present or Fall 2009 enrolling Jobs for America's Graduates (JAG) participants, Youth Employment Services (YES) participants and current WIA Adult, Dislocated Worker or Youth participants.

Latino Youth Conference

Latino Youth Conference for students in grades 5 – 12


On Saturday, May 16, IUPUI is hosting a Latino Youth Conference for students in grades 5 – 12, their parents, teachers, and counselors.

This is a wonderful opportunity to learn, see old friends, and meet new people. Participants will interact with Latino university students from several area institutions, and with our guest speakers, Julio Cammarota of the University of Arizona and Michael Tapia of the University of Texas. In our breakout sessions, participants will learn about the stages of planning for careers and higher education, and about the amazing opportunities for bilingual bicultural professionals in Indiana.
