Indy Food Coop proudly presents, award winning Skydancer Productions documentary film HEART & SOIL at the Harrison Center for the Arts, Gallery 2, 1505 N. Delaware.

Doors open at 5:30 with event starting at 6:00. Immediately following the film, an expert panel will spur discussion with attendees about local food issues. Light snacks. Family-friendly event.

About the film: HEART & SOIL, a 45 minute family documentary, offers hope for our planet. The notes from the Food Co-op Steering Committee's forming meeting are now available on South East Works in the Food Co-op Group

The next meeting of the Food Co-op Steering Committee will be December 2, 2008 at The Church Within @ 5:30 PM. The meeting, under the guidance of Mark Stewart, will be facilitated by Jerry Keys and notes will be recorded by Portia Haugen.

Current members of the Steering Committee include Mark Stewart, Nancy Buffenbarger, Rosemary Eads, Shirley Dardy, Angie Calvert, David Moffatt, Yvonne Brandenburg, Emily Vanest, with Josh Bowling as an advisor.

The discussion and the comment sections of the Food Co-op Group on Southeast Works has found common ideas among those actively participating in the discussions.

If we can get some more thoughts about the mission of the Food Co-op and the goals of the Food Co-op brought out on the Food Co-op Group on Southeast Works, the November 5 Steering Committee meeting will find us in a position to set forth our mission, goals, and products.

It Can Happen!!

At the Food Co-op Exploratory Meeting, we were given assurances that the SE can do a food co-op if enough people want to get involved. Josh Bowling, INRC, recommended visiting the Lost River Co-op in Paoli for further information gathering.

We have over twenty residents who have volunteered to be on the Steering Committee. If you would like to join the committee, please let me know by October 4, 2008 and we will set the initial meeting around the first of November. We are beginning Co-op discussions on SE Works COOP

Soil Yourself

Soil Yourself is a great article about backyard gardening and food co-oping by a neighborhood on the east side of Indianapolis. It really causes the reader to have dreams about the day we have our own operating food co-op.

I know some will delight in gardening and others will delight in eating the food and all of us will feel closer to our neighborhoods as a result.

Everyone can shop, anyone may join.

Food cooperatives are worker or customer owned businesses that provide grocery items of the highest quality and best value to their members. Co-ops can take the shape of retail stores or buying clubs. Food co-ops are committed to consumer education, product quality, and member control, and usually support their local communities by selling produce grown locally by family farms.

Do we need a Food Co-op in Southeast Indianapolis? Do we want a Food Co-op in the Southeast? Where should it be located? What would we hope to find there? Should it have things other than food? How should it be operated?

Join us on September 26th, to hear Mark Stewart, SEND, J.D. Haines, Premier Environmental, and Linda Proffitt, Global Peace Initiatives reveal the findings on their research into food cooperatives everywhere. Josh Bowling, INRC, will be there to tell us about the food co-op on the East side.
