GREEN INFRASTRUCTURE GRANT APPLICATIONS NOW AVAILABLE

The City of Indianapolis' Office of Sustainability and United Water today announced that applications for the Green Infrastructure Grant Program are available beginning July 27 through October 1, 2009 at www.sustainindy.org.

The Green Infrastructure Grant Program, funded by United Water, provides $100,000 per year through 2011 to local organizations working to implement environmentally friendly practices. Recipients are selected based on the viability of the project as a whole, plus the organization's capacity to ensure completion, to "seed" experience in the community for similar projects, to link sustainable principles to economic development and efficiency gains, and to act as an incubator by offering technical assistance to others in the community interested in implementing similar projects.

"Green Infrastructure is an important part of improving water quality in our city," said Office of Sustainability Director, Kären Haley. "These grants allow organizations in Marion County to implement projects that creatively address water quality issues."

The maximum grant awarded is $20,000 which requires a 20 percent matching contribution from the receiving organization. Examples of Green Infrastructure include rain gardens, rain barrels, green roofs and porous pavement. More information about green infrastructure is available at http://www.sustainindy.org/green-infrastructure.cfm

Recipients of the 2008 grants were: American Society of Civil Engineers, Binford Redevelopment Area and Growth (BRAG), Cottage Home Neighborhood Association, Southeast Neighborhood Development (SEND), and Keep Indianapolis Beautiful, Inc. (KIB).

Check Out Fountain Square Academy

Fountain Square Academy, one of only three public high schools in all of Marion County to make AYP (federal standards for academic achievement) in 2008, launched a television commercial today to inform neighbors of its many programs and to encourage students to enroll in its unique college prep program. Fountain Square Academy (FSA) was invited into the community by the Southeast Neighborhood Development Corporation and is now in its 5th year of operation. It serves grades 5-12 and partners with both Ivy Tech Community College and Garfield Park. High school students are enrolled in college classes and the school pays for the tuition and the textbooks. The high school's staff helps students while they are taking the college classes. Last year, students at its sister school, Fall Creek Academy, graduated with as many as 33 college credits and went on to a 4-year university as a sophomore. FSA partners with Garfield Park to offer basketball and other sports programs for students. Teach For America teachers will be working at the school this fall, too.

Last year, students at the school outperformed more than 73 percent of their counterparts across the country in what they learned in one year's time. The school is free to the public and provides the free breakfast and lunch program as well as transportation. To enroll, please log onto www.FountainSquareAcademy.org today. School starts August 10.
